Also what were life lessons that were good?

The millennium bug.

Spontaneous human combustion.

Quicksand

wiltshirelass1418 · 02/10/2023 15:05

Stop drop and roll. I thought I'd be on fire far more often than I have been Grin

Going to church! And a bad confession (Irish Catholic childhood)

Fightyouforthatpie · 02/10/2023 15:07

The alleged importance of a good work reference, work ethic and "professionalism" - all utter bollocks, no-one (who matters) really cares about that shit.

MooseBreath · 02/10/2023 15:08

"You'll get a great job if you go to University." Uh, no. Took ages to find an entry level position (wanting 5+ years experience) that treated me like crap and paid a pittance. The only people I know who did well finding work after University were Computer Science majors.

"If you save hard, you will be able to buy a house." Maybe if DH and I both went in on a 1 bed flat in our area after 5 years of living hand-to-mouth and only eating beans on toast.

Tennisfan1 · 02/10/2023 15:11

Yes, Quicksand 😂
The older I get, the more I doubt how important a university degree really is. It didn't help me that much to get a job and people are doing very well for themselves if they learned a trade instead.

Work harder at things you are naturally bad at. I teach my kids the opposite: work the hardest at the things you love the most. I wish someone had told me this years ago.

I thought Frank Spencer was an educational film showing how not to behave (I was only small at the time and the humour bypassed me!) I have been very glad to dodge any problems with roller-skating near buses, falling through ceilings and being covered with paint by applying the knowledge I gained from him. Thanks, Frank. I am always careful near traffic because of you!!

This is an excellent point.

Peak Oil. We were told that the world would be back in the stone age by 2000 because we'd have run out of fuels.

Nuclear War. During the 80s we fully expected to be obliterated at any time.

Fightyouforthatpie · 02/10/2023 15:14

You have to do things you don't enjoy - this is true to an extent of course but not in the way adults meant and nothing like as much as they tried to pretend.

Excellent point - also the ice age that according to leading scientists was going to freeze the whole of the UK pretty much solid by now.

TeaAndToastx · 02/10/2023 15:17

Not knowing my times tables. Teachers always used to say “you won’t be walking around with a calculator in your pocket everyday.” Little did they know 🤣

cushioncovers · 02/10/2023 15:19

Quicksand
Bermuda Triangle
Falling out of the car if I lent on the door even a tiny bit.
Dirty old men in raincoats
Getting square eyes if I watched tv too much
Nuclear war with Russia

Fifireee · 02/10/2023 15:20

Quicksand is really not the issue I was led to believe it would be.
