To tell you about my awkward train encounter 5 mins ago?

On a very long train up to Scotland. 4 hour journey, I’m 40 mins in and all seats are taken- everyone in their ticketed seat. I’m sat there with my book and a coffee when the lady sat next to me took off her shoes (bare feet). Well I feel mean but the smell is horrendous. A real sweaty cheesy feet smell that’s so strong. I dealt with it for about half an hour but it’s so difficult and distracting.

So I decided to buck up the courage (im not very confrontational) and ask the lady if she would kindly mind putting her shoes back on and as she speaks another language she basically said she couldn’t understand me despite me pointing at the shoes- she now has her eyes shut trying to sleep (shoes still off and against the seat of the chair in front)

I really can’t bear to put up with the smell for another 3 hours but there’s no seats to move to! There’s also lots of stops and I want to get comfy and not have to move seat about ten times when people come from other stops.

What should I do?

It's poor hygiene that cause stinky feet.

I knew a person with hyperhidrosis {excessive sweating in her feet- but they never ever smelled.

The person was able to get it treated by botulism injections {I think} but I knew them for years and when over at their house they never had shoes on and their feet were always non smelly- It comes down to washing and changing socks and airing out shoes.
Synthetic shoes like trainers can smell, but leather is the best for breathability . {no good for vegans of course}

I regularly travel from London and several times the same young woman has sat next to me on the packed commuter train. There is no chance to get away. She is always puffing and sweaty. She then proceeds to open a pack of M&S garlic prawns and eat them with her fingers, licking her fingers with lip-smacking sounds. Finally she wipes her fingers on the seat. Some people are just sub-human these days.

In reality, there is not a lot you can do. If you alert the person, and they put on their shoes, you have to travel the rest of the journey next to someone who would be highly embarrassed and uncomfortable at the least.

I travelled next to BO-stinky, farty, musty-alcoholic, snotty, sniffy, constantly scratching an itch type people for years on my commutes. Balm infused tissues, strongly scented hand sanitiser and a strong stomach helped me get through

I remember on a flight back from Tenerife being sat next to a man who stank of stale beer, sweat and cigarettes. He kept talking to me and his breath was the foulest thing I have ever experienced. He said he’d been sleeping on the beach for a week which explained the pong and he kept nipping to the loo for a smoke. That three hour flight seemed like an eternity. I feigned sleep to avoid facing him.

Bad smells are like torture! I had 3 hour coach trip with a nearby BO man and was nearly sick. But bad feet - well I truly sympathise.

I can only hope there was a Train Conductor you could ask to speak to her about it. Maybe she could wash them in the small basin in the loo..

I think I will carry powerful smelling salts and highly perfumed wipes on any journey I take in future.

RedMBristol · 04/10/2023 15:54

I would chuck her shoes out of the train at the next stop. Doesn't help you with this journey but it might make her think twice as she wanders around barefoot later

bringbacksideburns · 04/10/2023 17:20

To be fair, I’d kind of expect something like that on a flight from Manchester to Alicante!!

why?
You win Snob of the week. Well done

This happened to me when I was pregnant and I had horrendous morning sickness. This man sat opposite me and took off his shoes and socks. I asked him if he would mind putting them back on because it smelt and someone else said something but he just ignored us. Five minutes later I was throwing up in a bag. The guy moved and I managed to find a bin for my sick bag. I sat down feeling so embarrassed but I had asked him to put them back on.

The violent fantasies everyone is posting on this thread are really unpleasant.

Stop reading it, then.

Zone2NorthLondon · 04/10/2023 20:10

Violent fantasies? Certainly some daft and ill advised posts, they’ve not tipped into peditatus porn. If it is so triggering I’d advise not read

Ellen2shoes · 04/10/2023 22:15

Spray won’t work. A perfumed fart is the worst.

Merida46 · 05/10/2023 18:00

You should have sprayed the dirty bastards feet with perfume!

Passepartoute · 05/10/2023 21:46

How many people routinely carry perfume sprays around with them?

I do decant perfume into an atomiser, it’s little though, 10ml in total
not enough for smelly feet extinction

I always do. Just a 30ml bottle, or smaller. Though I carry a load of things around in my bag.

amberwhen · 07/10/2023 15:26

Though too expensive to waste on the smelly feet of a stranger.

I have sprayed it on my wrist when at close quarters with someone smelling less than fresh. I see that top has already been given.
