I was at a steakhouse and the burger served was pretty much completely pink inside. The menu did say the burgers are served a little pink and it’s ground beef so I expected it but honestly it was sooo pink and I’ve been reading up about E Coli risk in pink burgers so now I’m worried

It’s fine and I’d have eaten it

Ask for them well done if you don’t like it pink

SuperCam · 01/10/2023 20:56

Should be fine! I hate that you can’t get a burger cooked even a tiny bit rare these days.

DDivaStar · 01/10/2023 20:57

No personally I would have asked it to be cooked a little more. However with modern meat processing and storage I wouldn't expect much risk.

Cas112 · 01/10/2023 20:57

Yes I would have eaten it

shatteredL · 01/10/2023 20:57

I wouldn't but just simply because the thought knocks me sick 🤣🤣 if it too pink I'd have sent it back

nocoolnamesleft · 01/10/2023 20:58

No, I would not have eaten it. I know too much about E coli.

KoalaChaos · 01/10/2023 21:04

I'm assuming being at a steak house it was a beef burger, not a lamb burger or chicken.
Personally I'd be thrilled to finally find somewhere making burgers well.
I've worked in food and i know in a lot of places if you have a burger brown all the way through then it has been sitting on a gridle/ hot plate for so long then there's no flavour at all. One place I worked even microwaved their burgers to make them brown all through then just threw them on the grudle for 30 seconds each side to crisp. (Left there very quickly)
A medium or medium rare burger was cooked properly by a person standing and watching it. And they will have temperature probed it too to be sure it was done enough

Blanketpolicy · 01/10/2023 21:04

If ecoli is present would it matter if it is a lot or a little pink? Thought it would need do be thoroughly cooked through.

TheFirie · 01/10/2023 21:08

I wouldn't because I watched "poisoned" on Netflix!!

Whitewolf2 · 01/10/2023 21:18

I’ve eaten pinkish burgers a few times, been worried about it but never been sick, but I wouldn’t want to take the risk if it was really pink. As I understand it, ground beef means there could have been bacteria present which should be cooked thoroughly - as opposed to steak where bacteria can’t get through to the middle?

This. Pink inside steak i fine (I like mine blue) because any bacteria is on the outside, getting charcoaled. Burgers, all the germs are mixed into them so I'll only eat rare if I am very very sure about the place. I have eaten steak tartare but only in good places. Random steakhouse I wouldn't.

Cherrypo · 01/10/2023 21:29

Thanks. I’m starting to worry as my stomach feels a bit off now and is aching slightly and now I feel sick. Not sure if it’s because I’ve read up on it. Everyone’s burger was slightly pink but I do think mine was the pinkest. To me it looked uncooked. I left a bit that was the pinkest part as it just looked the same colour as mince beef in the supermarket, uncooked

If the meat was freshly minced then made into a burger its fine. They do this all the time in France. Delicious!

If its mince that was not freshly minced it ought to be cooked all the way through.

If the menu said served pink then it'll be the former.

ChesterDrawz · 01/10/2023 21:36

I thought everyone - or at least most people - knew why burgers shouldn't be served pink unless there's been extremely strict control of the meat's handling/storage before it was minced, but looks like that's not the case.

As someone also said above, I love steak very pink but burgers are a different thing completely.

Cherrypo · 01/10/2023 21:38

I have just had another look on their website and it says it’s the seasonings they use that make the burger look slightly pink. Now I’m even more worried as this was literally just very pink meat, definitely not due to the seasoning

Never.

I've done a public health course and I don't want food poisoning, thanks.

Undercooked mince shouldn't be served to anyone.

hideundermyduvet2023 · 01/10/2023 21:57

What kind of place was it ? Gastro type pub where they might have made the burgers themselves or Wetherspoons ?

The former I'd not be worried. The latter I would.

However nothing you can do about it now. The mind is very powerful and can induce nausea and stomach pains if think about it.

I differentiate between real illness and my mind playing tricks by thinking about whether I could eat anything right now. If I could eat, I generally know anxiety is at play....

Sorry I missed you said steak house. Chances are it will be fine imo

Vallmo47 · 01/10/2023 22:01

I’m sure it will be fine OP.
Next time you go just ask for it well done- but honestly I think it’s important you try to put it out of your head, nothing you can do now either way.
