Washing machine pods make clothes and machine smell

onebornsecibd · 01/10/2023 20:23

Ive always used powder but recently my new housemate has said that the washing machine has started to smell and also it did at her last place.

I've tried to clean the machine - bleach wash, vinegar wash etc, leaving door and tray open after use.

She uses the washing machine quite often - a bag of Daz pods have lasted about 6 weeks and there are 52 in a pack - I've used a few. She will use two per load of wash and multiple loads per week.

I've had the machine three years. I've not come across a smelly machine. Maybe it's because it's built in?

Does she close the door of the machine when she's done with it?

TheBirdintheCave · 01/10/2023 20:39

Oh wait, I've just seen you've tried leaving it open sorry 🤦🏻‍♀️ Definitely sounds like it's something she's doing though.

Do a high temperature maintenance wash & ask her to use powder. Capsules are notorious for this. Also if she's using 2 they probably aren't getting rinsed away.

TwilightSkies · 01/10/2023 20:41

It’s the pods. Liquid detergent just doesn’t work well with a lot of washing machines. Powder all the way!!

FionaChapman · 01/10/2023 20:50

Put the machine on a hot wash to give it a clean. Go back to powder, it dissolves easier so is less likely to leave residue in the machine. I always leave the draw open after each wash and it seems to work.

I've always been in the habit of doing this... have started to not do this

Would you defo say it's the cause? It's just she's not happy about using anything but pods.... because they smell nicer apparently

You need to use powder. Since I went back to using it for most loads, no smelly machine. It's cheaper, too.

MidnightOnceMore · 01/10/2023 20:57

Pods and liquid detergent make the machine smell because they clog up the tubes etc. Powder rinses through much better.

Do a regular hot wash (when washing towels is good), remove the drawer and leave the door open between washes.

hedgehoglurker · 01/10/2023 21:16

It will need a really thorough clean. Keeping the door closed (until recently) and using 2 pods per wash will likely have caused a huge mould and slime build up internally. Do you both only wash at 30 too? Great for the environment but not for the machine.

You need some good long hot washes to reduce the build up. Get a good washing machine cleaner like Dr Beckman and follow instructions.

I personally use liquid for most laundry, but use powder for whites (40), and towels (60). This helps keep the machine clean, but I still run an empty hot maintenance wash every 6 weeks or so, using a descaler or cleaner.

Door always ajar between washes and the drawer most of the time too. Also check the filter and wipe out the drum seal.

WannabeMathematician · 01/10/2023 21:22

I use pods but agree that you have to leave the door all the way open and the draw too. I regularly wash at 20 and never have smells but I do drum clean every six weeks. In winter also dry my washing in the small room with the washing machine but run a small (40W) dehumidifier so everything dries.

DirtyBlonde · 01/10/2023 21:25

I use pods most of the time

But use powder with a hot wash for towels

And haven't ever had the sort of stinky problems you describe

dementedpixie · 01/10/2023 21:27

Could she use pods and you use powder and that way it shouldn't get a build up from using just pods? And do an empty hot maintenence wash every so often to help remove sludge/residue etc

Devilsmommy · 01/10/2023 21:30

Have either of you cleaned the filter? People seem to forget that and all that stagnant water makes a right stink🤢

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2023 21:33

I use pods and my machine doesn’t smell.

She does fibe times the amount of washing I do and two pods every time

When this happened to my machine I did a couple of hot washes, with a dishwasher tablet in the machine. I only use liquid now and haven't had the issue again.

How many pods do you use? How big is your machines

OP posts:
Cephalaria · 01/10/2023 21:38

Since I switched from liquid to powder I've never had the problem again. Don't use fabric softener either, just a dose of white vinegar.

Shadowboy · 01/10/2023 21:38

I use pods and never powder. Ours is a washer drier and I swear it never smells because it all gets hot dried at least once per week.

Do they ever leave clothes in the machine after the wash completes? That won’t help.
where is the smell from - the drum or the drawer?

How many pods per wash did you use? One or two and how big was your load?

52 pods in 6 weeks??

Is she doing 2 large loads of laundry (necessitating 2 pods each) every day?

rhino12345 · 01/10/2023 21:54

I'm curious - what is she possibly washing so often?? We're a big family with a baby too and don't do as much washing!!!
