So fed up with how my hair keeps turning out

I don't know what the problem is but I can't get my hair right.
I think it might be because my hair is really fine and porous: if I have highlights they end up going a yellowy orange colour, I decided to give up on that and go dark.
I went to a really expensive place (I always do by the way, I'm not skimping on the salons) and explained clearly what I wanted. He went through a whole kerfuffle, dying it an initial shade and then adding a demi over the top to give me the dark brown I wanted. He assured me that going through this process would mean it would eventually fade in a lovely way with no reddishness.

Well here I am a mere month later, and the darkness has faded to a horrible sort of red colour, which is what it does every single time whether I get my hair professionally dyed or do it myself.

I'm so sick of this. I don't use any heat on my hair, I only wash twice a week using a colour protection shampoo.

How the fuck can I just have a nice dark brown colour that doesn't fade to this aging clown colour in a flash?

I'm really fucking fed up of shelling out £££ on "good" hairdressers when 4 weeks later and it looks the same as a box dye.

What the hell is going on? Is it because my hair is so porous or something?

Sorry for the rant but I'm sick of veering between balayage and dark just to get hair that looks natural in some way, im tempted to just fucking shave it all off.

I wonder if a hair colour deposit conditioner might be just the ticket.

Maybe you could try the natural brunette henna dye from Lush?

They’re happy to give samples so you can try it first.

Lalalaboomdydoo · 01/10/2023 18:33

@RudsyFarmer
Perhaps, or maybe a toner would be a good idea?
@CherryMaDeara
That Lush stuff has worked well for me in the past, it's a real bitch if you ever want to change later down the line though.

YANBU OP, mine does exactly the same thing. I've given up now.

I was told when I was younger that some hair just naturally heads towards red. Yours is just going faster- do you dye your hair very regularly? Could you perhaps pull out the amount of weeks between dyes?

CaptivePeanut · 01/10/2023 18:41

Sounds like your hair is too porous to hold the colour plus a demi is semi permanent so will fade and wash out over time.
Your hairdresser did the right thing by colouring it red before brown if it was highlighted previously.
Try using deep moisturising conditioner masks weekly, this will help make it less porous. I would suggest you get professional products for this as they are a lot better than highstreet ones. One can get hold of some of these products on amazon if you don't want to buy from a salon.
You could request a permanent colour next time but it depends on your hairs condition as to if it will stick.

Have you tried something like this? Green is the opposite of red on the colour wheel so neutralises it.

My hair just won't dye well.
I had to go to salons as home kits never worked.
I gave up iñ the end and let the grey through. It ended up working well for me

MichaelAndEagle · 01/10/2023 18:53

I had this and eventually just gave up and grew all the dye out. I'm just my natural colour now and I'll just have to accept it!

Lalalaboomdydoo · 01/10/2023 19:00

@CaptivePeanut
Will a permanent hold off fading?

I'm thinking maybe I need to get permanent, do a mask after every shampoo and use a toner

How often do you wash your hair?

Mine always takes a red hue after a month or so.

Wondering if you'd be better with a home dye more frequently rather than salon prices

CaptivePeanut · 01/10/2023 19:07

@Lalalaboomdydoo it really does depend on your hair if the permanent will last. Personally for my hair semi's last longer that perms. Plus semi's are less damaging.
Definitely work on getting more moisture into your hair as the better the condition the longer colour stays.
Also try having the water cooler when washing your hair. When the water is hot it opens the hair cuticle which allows the colour particles to come out quicker. Cold closes the cuticle so if you wash in in cooler water your colour should last a little longer.

I don't think expensive necessarily equates to the best or even really good - and even if someone is good, often it takes a couple of appointments for them to really understand your hair.
Do you know anyone with similarish hair to you, whose hair you like? Or even someone that you think their hair always looks amazing?
Ask them where they go.

Have also had salons where the cuts were amazing, but colour a bit shit.
