To find Laura Kuenssberg so annoying

I can't stand Rishi Sunak, but she doesn't stop interrupting and then you can't hear what either of them are trying to say. It's gone on for months now. How is she still doing this? I'm sure she's been in trouble for it in the past. It drives me mad. Just let the guest finish making their point.

I agree that there was too much interrupting today. There were several times when both she and Sunak were talking at the same time and it was difficult to hear what either was saying.

The interview about HS2 on yesterday's Today programme was exactly the same. By all means ask the question once or twice. But there's no point in continuing to ask when it's obvious that you are not going to get an answer!

anniegun · 01/10/2023 13:25

Sunak just babbled a load of word soup to avoid her questions. If she had not interuppted he would have just spouted platitudes for 30 minutes. He refused to answer whether HS2 would reach Manchester and constructed a war on motorists that no-one else seems to think exits. I still don't understood whether he wants to encourage 20mph zones outside schools or ban them. Or whether local councils should decide or westminster

I can’t stand her face. I do not bother to watch any of it.

You can't stand her face? bit harsh!

HotApplePiePunch · 01/10/2023 13:50

I liked her Laura Kuenssberg: State of Chaos programs - but I think it's a wider media and politician issue with political interviews at the moment though she not my favorite interviewer.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why Brexit happened. Political illiteracy.

Yup. Depressing, isn't it?

NonMiDispiace · 01/10/2023 15:53

I enjoyed her State of Chaos documentary but she, along with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, seem incapable of listening to others’ opinions and prefer the sound of their own voices.
The agrees I’ve, incessant interrupting means I immediately turn off the television as soon as they appear.

Disagree i think shes inspirational

So outright lying on social media that someone has been physically assaulted is ok?

not the inspirational unbiased behaviour I’d expect from a bbc journalist.

Yes, this. I felt like I had my kids both shouting at me that the other one did it and I just wanted to turn around and walk away.

Replying to 'fifthtimelucky' - I just joined mumsnet because it was the only google response to my question ("why is Laura Kuensberg show less popular than Andrew Marr?") which was not one of dozens of denials of reduced ratings! But it still didn't really answer the question, because AM also used to interrupt a lot, and also (like LK) kept repeating questions already irrefutably answered (like, next week it would be in the party manifesto/budget/etc.). But AM always had me out of bed Sunday morning (despite his camouflaged but clearly left-wing views not my own), whereas I only catch-up on LK later or never ... why?

I think people are tired/bored of the BBC.

The Marr show had been tired for a while and I always found him a lightweight at interviews, but then it meant the main politicians would go on there at least. Kuensberg is just really bad.

Question Time is unwatchable these days as well. Newsnight is the only worthwhile current affairs show on there.

pinotnow · 01/10/2023 17:56

The interview this morning was awful and I feel like Sunak talked over her and went on like a train about bullshit while she could barely get a word in to bring him back to the question. I'm not a great fan of LK but the way he conducted himself today reminded me of the leadership campaign when he kept talking over Liz Truss (who is a disaster, don't get me wrong) and came across as rude and boorish.

kevinfrance · 01/10/2023 18:11

Maybe it's because AM used to interrupt, but kept it relatively short and sharp. LK simply continues to over-talk if the interviewee doesn't "give way" (and it's not vice-versa - conventionally, it's the answerer who "has the floor"). Perhaps the show needs a 'Mr. or Mm. Speaker' to manage it ?

Cherrysoup · 01/10/2023 18:14

I had to turn it over this morning. She clearly isn’t bothered about actually hearing his answer. You could see he was frustrated.

Dymaxion · 01/10/2023 18:48

I spend a good deal of my morning drive to work shouting 'don't let them get away with that pack of lies, make them answer the bloody question !' at Radio 4. A good politician ( of any ilk) is well trained in not answering the question and a good interviewer should be able to wrangle it out of them.

UsingChangeofName · 01/10/2023 18:52

I think it is something about becoming political editor for BBC news.

Nick Robinson was a good reporter until he became editor, then he started making it all about him, and his opinion rather than whatever the news item was.
It was great when Robert Preston took over for a very short time, but then the same happened to him.
When LK started, she was like a breath of fresh air for a few weeks, but again, very quickly got to a stage where she seemed to think we were turning on the news to see her.

With each of them, it quickly got to a point where I would only watch the news on 'Catch Up' so I can fast forward over the time they are on.

Mind, I don't think the 'confrontational style' of interviewing gets the best out of anyone. MPs know the interviewers are trying to make a name for themselves and catch the MPs out. So MPs get all their 'media training' in saying nothing. MPs start out all defensive. Knowing the MPs are going to say nothing, the so called journalists then get even spikier and talk over / interrupt them more and so it has become this circle of no-one learning anything from seeing an MP on TV.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/10/2023 18:53

How can anyone think she’s biased towards the Tories? 😮

Fifthtimelucky · 01/10/2023 19:01

I do like Laura Kuenssberg and watch every week.

However I do wonder what the point was of interviewing either Rishi Sunak or Wes Streeting this morning, in advance of their party conferences. That's where any big policy announcements are likely to be made.

Dymaxion · 01/10/2023 20:46

I would say ' Such a shame you aren't willing to answer that question, I am sure voters will understand your reticence ?, shall we try another question ?'

Kazplus2 · 01/10/2023 21:07

I watched this interview and she interrupted him repeatedly because he repeatedly would not answer her question on HS2. He did the typical politician thing of ignoring her question and providing bland meaningless statements about levelling up!

Exactly! I honestly believe a lot of people commenting here did not watch the show or weren't actually listening to what was being said.

I would say ' Such a shame you aren't willing to answer that question, I am sure voters will understand your reticence ?, shall we try another question ?'

I often hear them say something along those lines on the Today programme.

LegendsBeyond · 01/10/2023 21:23

She’s uncomfortable to watch. I want to hear politicians speaking, not her shouting over them.

LIZS · 01/10/2023 21:29

She constantly talks over the interviewee

Stomacharmeleon · 01/10/2023 21:53

I really enjoyed her series on bbc 2. Coming from someone who enjoys politics but doesn't know much about the ins and outs it was informative.

I like Chris 'wavy hands and demonstrative face' mason. :)
