To ask when will the pain stop?

I woke up yesterday with a raging kidney infection, no idea where it's come from. So much blood in my pee and I'm in so much pain. I saw a nurse at out of hours yesterday and she prescribed me nitrofruantoin 4 x a day, I've taken 4 so far and it's done absolutely nothing.

When pee it's dark brown and full of blood clots. Literally out of nowhere. Horrible

It will take a few days to start to feel better on the antibiotics. Did they tell you any kind of painkiller you could take?

I have had this with a UTI but it only lasted about 24 hours after starting antibiotics. I drank loads, did a wee pouring warm water over me and altered the ph of my wee by taking home made cystitis treatment as had no commercial treatment ( recipe on internet, basically baking powder). Taking cocodamol regularly as well. It may be that you have to contact out of hours Services again, I personally would hang on and see how you feel in daylight assuming no temperature, vomiting, significant shivering but I am a nurse and am aware that sometimes HCPs set themselves a higher bar than most for medical intervention. Ideally don't take Brufen based pain killers as these can increase bleeding.

Awful I ended up in hospital with intravenous antibiotics and a drip. Give it another day or so and drink plenty. I feel for you

I was given stronger antibiotics and I swear the pain stopped almost instantly. It's awful. Don't leave it too long if it's not going away.

It took about 48 hours for me to feel an improvement although I wasn't given antibiotics for a 24 hour period in that. I'd moved wards and neither ward wanted to be responsible for them as they were expensive.

Hopefully today will feel better. It's miserable, so much sympathy from me.

Thank you!! I rang ooh again through 111 and they said I shouldn't have been given nitro because it's not suitable for kidney infections. It would never have worked. So I'm on Ciprofloxacin and hopefully that will work!

Oh poor you @EggTheParrot, sounds awful! Have you got a dodgy tummy as well? The reason I ask is that Cipro is a strong antibiotic (I was on it at the end of last year after a urine culture tested positive for ecoli), and it made me feel soooo sick. I then made sure I took it with plenty of food, and that definitely helped, so if you're already feeling sick, definitely try and eat as much as you can (tricky I know) when taking the Cipro.

This, definitely take with meals, you want as full a stomach as possible to help minimise side effects. Also don't lie down after taking them, you want to be as upright as possible for at least an hour afterwards. Hope it eases soon Flowers
