Posting here for traffic.
my ex ( British citizen with British passport) has been abroad for the summer looking after a family member. He is due to come back in october but just realised his passport expires in November. Will he still be able to get back into the uk as long as it’s before it runs out or does the 3/6 month rule still apply Thanks

Yes. If he's a British passport holder entering Britain, he just needs a valid passport, which his will be as it doesn't expire till November.

The 3/6 month validity rule is just something other countries apply to travellers going from Britain to their country. Think it's incase the stay gets unexpectedly extended.

Meant to add, worth checking with airline incase they have any other policies in place.

I've had a rummage around on Google and the general consensus is that passport expiry is no impediment to re entering the UK on a British passport. How is the ex travelling?

dementedpixie · 29/09/2023 14:14

Where is he?

Whereforartthoudave · 29/09/2023 14:40

As a British citizen he can just return, even without a valid passport though obvs it’s much more straightforward for him to get in WITH one. And he may not be able to board a flight with an expired one without docs from the local British consulate

airlines can't make policies about passport valdity. There are laws to cover what is needed, airlines are bound to follow them.

There have been several instances recently of airlines refusing to let people board their flights because they have incorrectly applied passport rules because they have been following their own internal policies rather than the actual rules.

I don't think there's anything wrong with me advising OP to be extra thorough and check.

No. They have been cases of them incorrectly applying passport rules as they....made mistakes/weren't trained properly/didn't get paid enough to give a shit.

Airlines are literally not allowed to make policies regarding passport validity, it would be illegal. You can't make up policies for things that are decided by law.

Also there is no need to check. What would be the possible rationale to have a British citizen need 3 or 6 etc months on their passport? What for? There is no reason, and it's not a thing that is needed, or exists.
