Semi light hearted one!

I've recently started doing the keto diet (not my preference, it's doctor recommended following a PCOS diagnosis) and lost 17lbs in 5 weeks. Obviously super chuffed with this as I've been really strict but still have another 2.5 stone to lose.

I'm going on an all inclusive sun holiday in a few days for a week, and I keep changing my mind as to whether I should try and stick to the diet (but maybe not being quite as strict) or just to go all out and eat what I want as haven't had a holiday abroad for a very long time.

Wondering what everyone thinks as I honestly keep changing my mind everyday.

YABU- Stick to the diet as much as you can
YANBU- Eat ALL the food

Stick with the diet. Otherwise all your hard work will be for nothing

A few questions before I vote!

Did you get 'keto flu' and if so, are you prepared to go through it a second time?

Does it have to be one extreme or the other? Last AI I was on they had the most amazing chips with this incredible secret seasoning. There's no way I could miss out completely but I also wouldn't need to fall off the wagon every single meal either.

Not a question, but you might be disappointed with the food and have to live on pasta or be so spoiled for choice that you don't need/miss many carbs, I'm not sure this is really a decide before you go thing - AI can be so hit and miss.

Why undo all your hard work and end up back at square one?

Thebigblueballoon · 28/09/2023 16:53

Stick to it as best you can. If you’re planning to drink, white spirits and diet mixers/tonic.

mrsbyers · 28/09/2023 16:54

Stick with it

Is there a middle ground where you can have a couple of treats but not go wild?

I luckily never experienced keto flu, I had already started cutting down on sugar over the summer so it wasn't such a shock to the system and made sure I drank plenty of water and electrolytes.

Where we're going will have lots of meat based options and so it hopefully won't be too much of a struggle to find something suitable. But seeing my DH drinking cocktails and eating ice creams will be a killer. Although I've managed fine the past 5 weeks without too much food envy.

Thanks for all responses, genuinely interested to see what the consensus will be!

Stick with it, especially as it was taken up following a medical recommendation, rather than just a diet fad.

CC222 · 28/09/2023 17:16

Why not have a compromise, stick to it as much as possible but allow yourself a cheat day or cheat meal. But it means having to get back into ketosis after...

SatsumaNightmare · 28/09/2023 18:13

Come off and do it with the caveat you go straight back on as soon as you get home. Unless you plan on NEVER eating carbs or junk again, you need to consider the balance of actually living.

BiliousOhGod · 28/09/2023 19:36

If you go from ketosis to all the carbs, you'll probably have a very upset stomach and be bloated for a day or 2, which may not be what you want on a holiday...

Youremylobser87 · 28/09/2023 21:10

Thank you all for your opinions, I think my plan will be to go with the mindset of not cheating on the diet, but if I want a little treat every other day I will consider it and get straight back on it once I'm home. I agree with most of the posters that it will be such a shame to put all the weight back on! A good few lengths every day in the pool too will be on the agenda.

I would do 80/20, stick to the diet most days and indulge a few days.

RobertaFirmino · 28/09/2023 21:33

I know you've come so far and jolly well done to you! Find a middle ground, as others have suggested and get straight back into keto when you return. Hopefully the pool will be lovely, warm and childfree so you'll be able to get your lengths in and I'm sure there'll be the opportunity for some nice walks if you feel that way inclined. Hope you have a great time!
