Yes

WhatACluster · 28/09/2023 16:17

If they smell ok I would yes

muddyford · 28/09/2023 16:17

I would cook it and eat it, as long as it smelled OK.

babymidgetgem · 28/09/2023 16:17

Do the sniff test, you will know as soon as you open them if they are off!

FinallyHere · 28/09/2023 16:18

Another vote for the sniff test.

If it were in date, and smelt off, would you still eat it. ?

DoodleMum12 · 28/09/2023 16:19

Sniff test vote here !!

PinkRoses1245 · 28/09/2023 16:19

Yes if it smelt ok. Those dates are very precautionary anyway

minimagnums · 28/09/2023 16:20

It's heavily seasoned, will I still be able to tell? 😅
We've only recently reintroduced meat into our diet so sorry if this all sounds ridiculous!

Things don’t “go off” that quickly. They can’t be 100% safe to eat on Wednesday and then gone off on Thursday. You do need to be cautious and sensible with meat and dairy - but as others have said I would do a visual and smell check and if both are ok then I would absolutely eat 24 hours after their date.

If raw chicken is off, no amount of seasoning would hide the smell.

WongWifi · 28/09/2023 16:27

If it smells fresh and is not slimy, I would.

Letitgonowgr · 28/09/2023 16:28

I always struggle with this. Sniff test would be fine but seasoned might hide it a tad! I know I won’t enjoy it if I’m not sure so tend to er on the side of caution!

Exactly this. Smell it and see. If it's been in the fridge all the time, it's almost certainly fine.

underneaththeash · 28/09/2023 17:12

If you’re not 100% sure, I’d not eat it.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 28/09/2023 17:31

Off chicken smells really obvious, in a need to double bag it and put it in the outside bin way.

If you don't notice anything it will be absolutely fine.

Helenahandkart · 28/09/2023 17:32

We regularly eat chicken that’s several days out of date. One good telltale that it’s going off is that the cellophane lid balloons up. But we would even eat it then as long as it smells ok. Yours will be fine after one day.

OnGoldenPond · 28/09/2023 18:03

Going one day past the use by date doesn't mean it has gone off. Look at it and sniff it. Does it have any discolouration or anything visibly growing on it? Does it smell off? If no, it has not gone off and is safe to eat.

Shops often use an unreasonable margin of error for use by dates and food is often safe to eat for several days (meat, fish, dairy) or even weeks after the use by dates. They are often used to encourage us to throw away food that is perfectly safe to eat and go buy more in their stores.

On the other side, if food is badly stored by the shop it can go off before the use by date so always do the above checks before eating.

Growlybear83 · 28/09/2023 18:36

I wouldn't risk eating chicken past it's use by date, particularly if it's very seasoned.

Yes they do. 1 bacterium can turn into 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 in a day, depending on how fast they reproduce.

ShowOfHands · 28/09/2023 19:38

The claim that you'd always be able to smell/see if meat is off is a myth but always trotted out. Hence why food poisoning happens (not always this but of course it happens). Some of the most awful bacteria can be present and make you bloody unwell and you'd have precisely no idea.

If it smells/looks off, it's gone off. If it smells/looks fine, it might be fine. Equally, it might not. Hence the strict storage and handling rules.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/09/2023 19:42

If something has a “use by” of 24 hours after it’s produced, you’d be silly to eat it after 48 hours. At the other extreme, something with a “use by” of 30 Sep 2024 will be fine on 1 Oct 2024. No-one would set a “use by” that close to it going off.

minimagnums · 29/09/2023 10:40

Didn't smell so cooked it and pleased to say we're all alive and well 😂
