To be able to buy a long enough retractable washing line?

Quietvoiceplease · 28/09/2023 13:16

OK I realise this post makes me peak-dull person.
But I’ve spent so long googling for a sufficiently long retractable washing line and can’t believe they don’t exist. Who on earth is policing the washing line market?
I want one that will span 25m.
Can’t find one anywhere.
Don’t be fooled by the seductive ads for 30m washing lines. Bought one. It’s 15m long (with two lines). Ffs.
Help!
(Yes, yes I need to get out more, I realise)

On the basis that most people won't have 30 metres of garden, then I'm going to say that no, a 30m retractable washing line doesn't exist.

I'm quite impressed they do a 15m x 2 one!!!

You're probably better off making your own that just wraps around something.

SM4713 · 28/09/2023 13:21

Is it because once its loaded with several kg's of washing, the centre of the line would fall down- unless sufficiently supported by something else?

Maybe look at a DIY option, with a retractable thing at one end, your own rope/wire/cord, and a strut to support it in the middle.

Hufflepods · 28/09/2023 13:22

At 25m you are going to need a support to prop it up or the line will not stay stable and taut which is why the 30m one comes as two lines. At the point of adding in a vertical support you are taking away the 'retractable' element of it.
It comes down to structural integrity, the same reason large tables come in 2 or more pieces.

Frabbits · 28/09/2023 13:23

Make your own.

Buy a long enough stretch of washing line and repurpose a hosepipe reel or something similar.

You'll need at least 2x poles in addition to whatever you are using at the ends I would have thought though to support the weight.

Scampuss · 28/09/2023 13:24

A washing line that long will droop horribly without several line-props, surely?

Can you have a pole fitted at the centre point of your preferred line span and put 2 extendibles on it?

allgrownupnow · 28/09/2023 13:27

I share your frustration OP.
And what's with all the clothesline prop hate on this thread? Of course you'll need a couple of props, but they are widely available for a few quid and also easy to stow away when not in use... no biggie

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/09/2023 13:39

Yabu.

BlueChampagne · 28/09/2023 13:45

Sorry, just re-read, and yes it's 2x15m. As you were ...

Quietvoiceplease · 28/09/2023 14:05

I realise it makes my garden sound massive but it’s a diagonal measurement (because that’s where the concrete posts are) and, in defence, where I live it feels quite small.
Of course I’ll use props btw.
I’m currently using a homemade one and it’s beyond rubbish and doesn’t easily retract (I realise that says more about me than anything else).

Genuinely curious as to why the market doesn’t provide one. I’m really not the only one who’d like one, am I?

Can you get two 15m ones and have them meet at a pole in the middle? You could use a sun umbrella base to secure the pole temporarily.

towriteyoumustlive · 28/09/2023 14:12

Use two 15 metre ones then hook them together in the middle?

Quietvoiceplease · 28/09/2023 14:13

That’s an idea I hadn’t thought of. Thank you! Would need a suitable pole somewhere. Might resort to this!

Not sure joining them works but two separate ones might as a last resort. Thinking now of developing a new range (Dragons Den?) where the cord is just, I dunno, longer….
Maybe with a matching prop or two?

For a 25 meter span I think you're going to need a fixed pole at the halfway point for it to be stable, not just stretchers.

If you've got a fixed pole at the halfway point, then get a 15m retractable line at each end, and run it to that fixed pole.

SM4713 · 28/09/2023 17:31

I realise this isn't what you asked at all, but any reason you'd want your washing on display right across your garden, and not get something like this that can be folded flat when not in use?:

I came here as my google search directed me to your post. I’m looking for exactly the same as you. Please tell me you found one??!! 🤞

Hi saw this and wondered if you found one and where from as I am having exactly the same issue

AmusedGoose · 05/04/2025 16:34

We've had several and they always break. Buy a strong normal one with clips so you can take it down when necessary.

I know it's 3 years ago, I found this because I have similar issues.
I don't think it's to much to ask, everyone with a long line uses props, you just want to remove the thing when you want to use the garden. Did you find an answer?

How about a 15M line each end that clip together in the middle?

rwalker · 11/05/2025 15:00

There’d be an enormous amount of of tension /weight on the fixing point and it would sag

The 30m line I have does, luckily there's a perfect answer called a line prop.
I'm just want a line that can easily be stored away so it doesn't garrotte people who come round for a BBQ, two 15m meeting in the middle, what's the worst go wrong.

Exactly this, works perfectly. Buy a clip to quickly join the two together.

Two long rigid pieces of pipe with a small cut at one end with hoist them up and keep them supported. On a nice day I can have 3 washes out and back in by 11am because of my long line.
