Victim of identify theft from online mail orders request goodwill from Retailer?

Rather expensive electronic good sent to myself due to fraudster setting up new account in my name and obtaining credit (not store/credit card) from a well known online retailer. For the hassle and time to contact , stress and collection organisation is it reasonable to request a goodwill gesture? eg a money off voucher? Their processes were not good enough to stop the fraud and I dont even have an account with them.

A second courier turned up at my door, likely to be the fraudster themselves, to try and take the said goods to a second address,

IBU - No, it is part of today's world these things happen
IANBU - Yes, their processes failed and stress , time and collection should be noted

If you've never had an account with them then they didn't cause the identity fraud, they were as much a victim surely?

The retailer's processes? Surely the issue is with your own banking security not the retailer.
Money off an item that you didn't order or want in the first place surely sounds like an odd thing to request?

I just meant £20 quid voucher off or something. Apparently you can open an account with name , address and birthday. The first two you can get just by seeing letters through a post box. Birthday isnt too difficult either....

I think its rather harsh that it is my security around info, based on these three items, that has cased this fake account to be opened.

This is not a banking transaction....a new account with Retailer was open and credit issued, ie buy now pay later. No sums of money actually left my current account.

@ButWhatAboutTheBees Yes that is true, the online retailer is also a victim though as a national retailer i would hope their fraud processes would be top notch for theirs and customers benefit.

How did the fraudster know which address to use? And that you, living at that address, would pass the credit checks? Where did the emails go confirming dispatch and delivery?

Sounds like your privacy controls are a leaky sieve tbh. Not uncommon, but not the retailer's fault either.

@HicIocusEst I accept sounds grabby and unfair to request voucher.

I received no emails no texts , just a parcel turn up one evening with my name and address on it. As a company director , my details are on the companies house website which i am guessing they could have got it from. I have learnt now the value of having a non residential company address.

Fraudsters would just apply on retailers website and if it does not pass credit checks then they would move onto whoever's data they have next to try and open another fradulent account.

Pretty sure you will have had to link some kind of bank details to an account to open even for credit..

Did the company let you keep the goods?

YABU, not because “these things happen” but because it wasn’t the retailer’s fault. They received an order and fulfilled it in good faith.

I've literally never heard of any retailer agreeing credit without any bank or card details. Seems very strange.

@CherryMaDeara No i did not hand over goods. I said nothing is going anywhere until i have called retailer. The second courier /potential fraudster said they had a booking to take it onto another address

Some strange responses...

She is not being ''greedy'.

This company clearly failed to conduct proper identity checks and carelessly gave credit to a fraudster.

It caused disruption for the OP and she had to deal with the retailer to sort it out.

Perfectly entitled to an apology, an explanation and a good will gesture.

OP I think you should be checking your credit report because once fraudsters get hold of your details, they often try to use them several times. Keep an eye on your file so you can spot any further problems early.

I was a victim of identity theft too I had a catalogue (like studio) hadn't ordered anything for years they hadn't sent me anything for years I moved house they decided out of the blue to send me a catalogue to my old address (i had changed my address online like everything else) suddenly a parcel turns up at my house with clothing lots of it turns out that the new tenant had ordered a stack of clothing in my name to my old house using my account I was unimpressed they said they weren't going to accept the return as it was my order (it wasn't) I pointed out that the clothing was all wrong this was all baby girl clothing and teen male clothing I had a pre teen girl and a toddler boy I wasn't a size 18 either they were scathing saying that I had obviously made a mistake but I needed to pay for it I said no accept the return NO called the police they wouldn't take action against her as there was "no harm done" I had the items gave me a police incident number and the catalogue took the items back they then closed my account blacklisted me and my address I couldn't get anything even as a guest (you pay before they send it) because of this basically treated me like a criminal because of someone else

Pathetic response I was glad they went bust

You and the retailer and both victims of fraud. Why on earth should they give you a voucher for something? It’s an unfortunate thing, but you’ve cleared it up so no one will be chasing you for payments and the retailer gets their stock back. It’s all done.

Going on and asking for a voucher from them just makes it seem like you were in on the whole thing, or made up the fraud in order to get some discounts on future orders. Just stop it. Honestly… out for all you can get isn’t a good look.
