References at work for new job

When applying for a new job, it states can references be contacted prior to interview. Would it be okay if I put no? Would it affect my application?

I always put no.

Doesn't affect your application. Most people put 'no' if they are still working in that organisation

My manager probably knows I am looking for another job. I've had a references prior to interview a few months ago and my manager got a bit funny.

Of course you can put 'no' - it won't affect your application. I always put 'no'.

Always put no

BashfulClam · 28/09/2023 10:59

I always put no and on my cv I wrote ‘References available on request’ this way they don’t have details and can’t ‘accidentally contact them.

You should tell the people you are naming to provide a personal reference ( and even ask of it is ok) so that they know that they have been put forward.

If asked I would normally not offer details of named people rather use "details will be supplied subject to offer".

So saying no contacing people before the interview would be normal

Thank you for your reply. It is with a school so its an online application form rather than a CV. I have selected no at my current employer but have selected yes at a previous employer.

I always put no. Especially if applying for multiple jobs, you don't want 15 different organisations ringing your manager before you've even been offered an interview.
