I’m Currently working a set number of hours and not prepared to work more hours than I do. I work in a team where we all do the same job on different hours. We had a pay review last year and pay is in line with similar jobs locally but I’ve seen other jobs for more money per hour in similar (but not identical) sectors. I have a good skill set and I am good at my job, I could easily get a job somewhere else if I wanted to.

I like where I work though it’s near to where I live and really convenient with no travel. It’s also flexible so I can change my days or hours if I need to quite easily.

However someone in our team is off sick long term and our workload has increased putting us under more pressure. HR and our manager has offered us more hours, optional and flexible and even remote working for time and a half on weekends if we wanted and they are also trying to get the work covered by some expensive agency or secondment but this isn’t good enough tbh and I don’t want to help train up a new person.

The job hasn’t changed day to day but but we feel like we have all this pressure on us and it’s stressful worrying about it. We have asked our company for a 20% pay rise to compensate for this as it’s not fair to us to carry the sick person and we don’t really feel valued. I did also tell HR I was prepared to go and find another job and then they really would be stuck.

They won’t tell me what they are going to do about the person off sick, who I reckon is taking the piss and I honestly think they should just get rid of them. They won’t tell me why they are off sick and when I ask them what’s going on they just keep saying there is a process to follow but I don’t believe they will do anything.

Why should I do this job for this money when someone else gets to sit at home on full sick pay?

It’s absolutely none of your business why they are off sick and why. The company are correct in not telling you.

Also, you are under pressure but don’t want to train anyone else and feel your burden would be eased by a 20% pay rise?! You sound like a chancer tbh. A pay rise won’t make your job easier in the work load sense.

FionnulaTheCooler · 27/09/2023 19:44

Your colleague's sick leave reasons are none of your business. It sounds like they are trying to find solutions but none of them are palatable to you so if you really don't like it then follow through on your threat and start job hunting.

Mayim · 27/09/2023 19:46

I think that if you feel this way, you'd be better off finding another job - as your relationship with your current employer isn't a happy one.

They cannot tell you why the other employee is off sick but have you thought, rather than 'taking the piss', they could be very unwell - and that this could happen to anyone, which is why sick pay exists.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 27/09/2023 19:48

Get a new job then. You can change what you are paid by going elsewhere.

As for rhe rest of your post you are being so unreasonable. It is no business of yours at all what the person is off sick with

Strawberryfieldsforeverrr · 27/09/2023 19:50

You sound very hard to manage and not a team player.

Whataretheodds · 27/09/2023 19:51

It's a basic tenet of a responsible employer to offer sick pay as part of the Ts and Cs. It's part of your employment contract too.

If you don't like it, become self-employed or work somewhere that doesn't pay over SSP.

Slothlikemum · 27/09/2023 19:52

I mean, if you refuse to train up anyone when they're trying to get someone in to cover them you're taking the piss. What do you want them to do? If someone's signed off sick they can't make them come back so the only option is to get someone to cover and that person will require training.
Everything about your post is ridiculous and taking the piss. Suspect HR won't worry if you do toddle off and get something else.

Sexnotgender · 27/09/2023 19:53

You sound like a nightmare. Just go get the other job.

smallshinybutton · 27/09/2023 19:54

Are you having a laugh? 20% payrise?

The person who is off sick is NOTHING to do with you so butt out.

They've worked out a way to deal with it and that's not good enough for you. Fair enough don't work more hours but I don’t want to help train up a new person. is a terrible attitude to have. If you want a payrise then training the new person is a good way to get one.

I can only assume this is a weird reverse and you are in fact managing this person as if not you need to examine your attitude.

Spirallingdownwards · 27/09/2023 19:56

It is simply none of your business why anybody else is off sick and how your company is dealing with it.

I suggest you go and get those other jobs you believe you can walk into.

Dacadactyl · 27/09/2023 19:56

You sound difficult and not a team player. If I was your boss I'd be glad to see the back of you.

TheShellBeach · 27/09/2023 19:59

I could easily get another job if I wanted to

Go ahead then.

dextersontopofhiskennel · 27/09/2023 19:59

I like where I work though it’s near to where I live and really convenient with no travel.

But if you got another job elsewhere, how much extra would you really be getting? Surely you'd have to pay for travel?

And how exactly would a 20% pay rise take the pressure off?? Wouldn't it still be there???

You sound delightful.

CremeEggThief · 27/09/2023 19:59

I get why you were originally frustrated, but you're coming across as someone unpleasant and completely unsympathetic. Oh and nosey too!

MrsMiagi · 27/09/2023 20:00

I had a team member like you. No empathy at all. Felt terrible when the colleague off sick died of cancer. You sounds awful I think you should go get that other job you reckon you could easily get.

randomrandom · 27/09/2023 20:05

That's because it's none of your business. They will never tell you and the fact you think they should is really inappropriate

To be honest, you sound like the kind of employee (combative, obstructive) who HR would be absolutely delighted to get rid of

Womencanlift · 27/09/2023 20:19

I would be helping you write your CV if you were on my team. You sound awful. You have absolutely no right to know why someone is off

Tilly18101 · 27/09/2023 21:03

People like you are why I no longer manage people, awful entitled attitude.

This.

You have no right to know why your colleague is off sick. I have no idea why you'd think that was reasonable. Your employer is trying to bring new staff in but you're unwilling to support their training. That's pathetic, frankly.

I used to work with someone like the OP. I ended up off sick with stress because of them. Combative. Not a team player. Selfish.

SparklyLeprechaun · 27/09/2023 21:27

So let me get this right. Your job has not become more difficult. You are offered extra hours, with good terms, if you want them, but you're not forced to accept.
But you want 20% extra because you feel "pressure". And you want to know why someone is off sick for too long, although it's none of your business.

Yeah, go and work somewhere else, they'd be well rid of someone with this attitude.
