I’m a lone parent, no other support. Obviously I do chat to friends but I am panicking a bit about milk and food.

Dd is one in a month and starts nursery. How do you transition from formula to whole milk? Surely it’s not just swapping it totally at 12 months? How do you feed her, is it still milk in a bottle with a teat? How much does she have?

Also, how much should she be eating?

The nursery says she will have a mid AM and mid PM snack, is this normal?

I feel so stressed and alone.

For my two I just gave them a 7/8 oz bottle of cows milk before bed. Just a straight swap from the formula.
Does yours have a bottle in the afternoon still? Keep it the same for nursery.

And very normal for nursery. Mine has breakfast/lunch/ dinner and 2 snacks whilst she's there.

You introduce it as a drink like solids and the reduce the formula. She can have it in a cup or soppy or bottle. She should be taking vitamin supplements every day (see nhs website for latest advice then talk to pharmacist). It’s much easier once they can drink cows milk because it’s available everywhere. Be happy this is the good bit.

You can slowly start introducing cows milk when she turns one. With my little one we did about 70% formula and then 30% cows milk and slowly started adding more cows milk until she was into drinking cows milk. She was also just having cows milk first thing in the morning and before bed but I know some friends little ones loved milk and would just have it in a sippy cup. My little one is 17 months and we are now moving from a bottle with a teat to a little toddler cup for milk.

At one year old she was having milk, then breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and then milk before bed. Water was In a little cup for her to have free access all day.

At 1yrs old eating 3 meals and snacks is normal (but obviously a gradual process). At that age mine had milk in a morning with breakfast and before bed, we started by mixing it 50/50 with formula for a week or so then made full switch.

I know lots of people give toddlers a baby's bottle still to drink out of because it's easy but they really shouldn't drink out of a bottle after 12mths, it's really bad for their dental development.

ZebrasLoveLions · 27/09/2023 15:04

She should not be having bottles after 1, it’s not good for oral or speech development.

She needs either a cup with a straw (no valve) or an open cup.

@pecanpie101 thanks so much. shes currently having 20 ounces a day roughly, is this far too much? One after breakfast, lunch and dinner.

@ZebrasLoveLions ok thanks should I start putting formula in one of those now then?

@MaryShelley1818 can I start mixing now or is it too soon? Does milk need to be organic?

@Ohthatsabitshit I’ve not been giving vitamins, when should I have started that? How do you know which to get?

My little one just turned 1 and I switched him straight to toddler soya from soya formula. Mine will not take milk out of a cup so I do still give it in a bottle as he only has 1 before bed so really don't see the problem. Don't let people make you feel bad if she still has to have it in a bottle, as far as I'm concerned if my baby wants milk and will only take it in a bottle then that's what he's getting

She will be getting the vitamins in the formula, when you transition give some vitamin drops. You want to make sure they have vit d in them. Also about 16oz-20oz is fine at 11 months.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/09/2023 15:14

We just swapped at 12 months when the tub ran out. Went from bottles to cups at the same time. It is much easier to do it when they are small.

With mine I gave them tastes of cows milk in cereal and porridge and sometimes a little in their cup mid afternoon when they dropped that bottle so it was already familiar.
