Child late to school everyday

My child gets home to school transport. This year they have increased the number of children on the route.

My child has been late to school every single day so far.

It’s a long journey and the whole journey can take up to 1hr 45 from first pick up so starting the journey earlier isn’t feasible as the first child already has a very long day.

AIBU to think this isn’t acceptable and the LA/taxi company need to rearrange the route so the children arrive on time.

You are so not unreasonable!!! How old is your child?

Lavender14 · 25/09/2023 14:52

How late are they arriving? I think it's absolutely worth asking and pointing out but realistically the budget for changes probably doesn't exist at the moment and your child is already having a very early start to the day and long commute. I imagine their suggestion will be to move pickups forward. If it's 5 or 10 minutes I wouldn't worry but if it's long enough that it's affecting their education or they're getting in trouble then it needs addressed. Is there nowhere more local your child could go to instead or is this specialist provision?

IVFbeenverylucky · 25/09/2023 14:53

One child spends 3 1/2 hours on the bus and is still late for school!!! Definitely complain - contact the Council, your local Councillor, your MP, and threaten them with judicial review and the Ombudsman. This is out of order completely.

Ohthatsabitshit · 25/09/2023 14:55

The journey should be less than an hour for all children and no one should be late everyday. 😱

Dizzyshoes · 25/09/2023 14:55

A few times they have been 20 mins late, usually 10-15mins.
The children range from yr 7-11.

No, it's not okay. Taxi trips can start so early for many pupils but they should be getting there on time except for the is unusual circumstance. You've probably complained to county transport already but you need to keep on at them. Often a school or base won't be able to complain for you as they tend to deal direct with the parents.

I know a pupil who missed the first couple of weeks of term because transport wasn't arranged for them properly in advance (they'd been getting a taxi for years). It's honestly ridiculous.

ASCCM · 25/09/2023 14:57

You need to find out what the ‘maximum acceptable travel time’ is from your local authority and go from there.

at my LA I think it’s 2hours. They have a responsibility to give you a transport offer, but you don’t have to accept it. I’m sorry to say, it’s really unlikely you’d get an alternative funded solution.

Figgygal · 25/09/2023 14:58

Blimey how far away do you live from school and how many pick ups for it to take that long?
I expect due to cost they'll just change pick up times too but how long would the direct journey take in comparison?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/09/2023 14:59

How do they even manage bathroom needs on a journey like that? It's such a ridiculous length of time to travel to school each day.

Dizzyshoes · 25/09/2023 15:01

So journey for first child would take about 60-70 mins max direct.

Maximum journey time for a secondary school child should be 75 mins max but LA have said as it’s out of county it’s irrelevant.

Did you choose the out of county or was it the only appropriate provision?

I consulted with the school and got DS a place there, the LA didn't offer an alternative as it’s the nearest suitable school and ‘cheap’ for specialist provision.

Doesn't necessarily need to be far. I'm 4 miles away from work, and the bus can easily take 1hr 15 mins or longer in rush hour as the traffic is so horrendous (and the route doesn't have that many stopping points). You can walk it quicker, so now I rarely take the bus!

Ohthatsabitshit · 25/09/2023 15:40

What bullocks of course it “counts” if it’s out of county. I smell bullshit.
