I was on the bus yesterday (one of those bendy ones where the driver doesn't check the tickets). Inspector got on and found a gentleman (very smartly dessed) who had only a train ticket which wasn't valid for the bus. Man explained that he doesn't travel this way (don't want to say where) very often and said he was here for a meeting and that he asked at the ticket office for a ticket that would be fine for buses as well. Inspector was very nice, explained that ticket has to have a certian symbol to be valid on a bus. Anyway - he didn't give him a fine or anything just told him next time to make doubly sure of the ticket.

So - I get off the bus and go into work and he gets into the lift with me!! I checked and he has a staff pass (for our building) so what he told the inspector about coming here rarely and coming for a one off meeting wasn't true. It seems as though he's trying to save money by buying only a train ticket knowing that the inspectors rarely check tickets on the buses.

As I work in the public sector I am really shocked about this and don't know whether I should report him? I saw him today as well in the office - he avoided my eye and hurried past -so I guess he knows that I know. Any advice?

maybe you WERE the drug-crazed hedonist every other civil servant could only dream of becoming.........

madamez · 05/03/2008 14:30

FFS given the greed incompetence and dishonesty of most transport companies I say good luck to him/ And you need to get a life and learn to keep your beak out of things that are not your business.

JodieG1 · 05/03/2008 14:39

Why would civil servants be any better than the rest of us? Odd thing to think.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 05/03/2008 14:41

How do you know he has a staff pass?
And why be so nosy.
Is your job that boring?

WallOfSilence · 05/03/2008 14:48

Maybe he meant he doesn'e come by train/bus or from your area often?

He maybe drives to work or lift shares.

I say stay well out of it

theBOD · 05/03/2008 15:35

don't grass him.

Lawrene8 · 05/03/2008 15:35

Mademez - I think dishonesty is everyone's business - would you say the same if I saw a burglar breaking into your home and running off with your stuff?

I know he has a staff pass as it was round his neck and our passes are very distinctive.

everyone knows that screwing over the gov and the public services aren't the same as robbing another person. both of them make it their business to squeeze every last penny out of their citizens/customers so if someone can get away with ripping them off i'm all for it.

Lawrene8 · 05/03/2008 16:07

Surely we all pay more for for services as a result of those who are dishonest i.e shoplifters, benefit fraud ect? So why is it so different to stealing from an individual?

How would those who think stealing from the government or public services is OK feel about someone stealing from their employer?

(I'm with you on this, Lawrene8)

OrangeKnickers · 05/03/2008 16:13

I am at the Inspector, I bet he wouldn't let a scruffy / young person off if they used the same excuse.

Lawrene8 · 05/03/2008 16:21

You are right orange knickers - I thought at the time that if he'd been a scruffy young boy in jeans then he would not have been treated in the same way.

Maybe he's doing an undercover 'mystery shopper' excercise to see how vigilant inspectors are and how soft and lenient!

Anyway - hopefully the embarrassment will make him reform.
