To wonder if blood test are necessary

My 5 year old has suddenly started having some accidents- wetting herself at times and one or two bedtime accidents. She has been potty trained since she was 2. She started school about a month ago- so we were wondering if it was just the change in routine.

Saw nurse at GP practice around 2 weeks ago who did a urine dipstick test- she had a UTI which cleared up with antibiotics. She started having the odd accident again over last week so took her back for another urine test which was clear. Now, the latest appointment was with my husband and not myself. He came home and announced that my daughter is to get bloods done to check for diabetes. The thing is, as a nurse myself, I’m just not sure it’s necessary. Yes, she is having accidents but she isn’t drinking excessively (if anything she doesn’t drink enough). She isn’t eating excessively, overly tired or losing weight.

I feel like she will be an absolute nightmare getting bloods done and it’s not really indicated symptom wise.

Would it be wildly unreasonable to request that they send off a sample to the labs and wait for the outcome of this then discuss checking for things like diabetes? It just feels a bit invasive and overkill to jump to having her have bloods done.

I’m impressed you got two doctors appointments.

I don't know if it's different for children, but I certainly didn't have symptoms of drinking excessively, being tired - and most definitely no weight loss.
Did the urine test indicate a potential problem - a while ago, but I think I did urine tests first, then a blood test to confirm.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 25/09/2023 02:11

I'd get them done. Just to be safe.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/09/2023 02:11

Not every child/person displays the most common symptoms of any ailment. If blood tests are recommended to rule out diabetes, which is obviously a disease best caught early, I don't understand why you're hesitating. Taking blood is hardly "invasive."

Mothership4two · 25/09/2023 03:00

Isn't it just a prick test? Sorry if ignorant - I am ovbiously not a nurse!

Might be a good idea to get all bases covered especially as others saying not everyone has all of the symptoms.

KnowledgeableMomma · 25/09/2023 04:44

I think the information a blood test provides (even if it comes back as everything is normal) surely outweighs the 'nightmare' of a few moments of getting it done. It's not a pain she will remember forever.

No there were no abnormalities with her urine at all.

No it’s fasting glucose.

Thanks all! I’m happy to accept I’m overthinking it- I will keep the appointment and get it out of the road.

If she had diabetes, would this not be obvious from a urine dip? Are there cases where there's high sugar in the blood, but this doesn't show in the urine?

I realise a blood test is more accurate as to the precise level, but a urine test shows if it's problematically high, I thought?

DewinDwl · 25/09/2023 11:20

DC1 had blood tests at that age. They were on the top of the hand, the same area where you have a cannula put in. They give you amla cream beforehand so in theory the child shouldn't feel anything.

For most of the tests the cream worked and the staff were fab and DC didn't even realise what was happening. For one test the cream didn't work so well and DC was in a bit of pain. For another test the healthcare worker wasn't that brilliant and DC had a panic attack. I still feel sick thinking about it. However in your position OP I would go ahead with the blood test.

Agree it seems like total overkill considering the recent school start. That is said as having had 2 kids with chronic incontinence.did your husband perhaps answer the questions in a way that might have indicated other symptoms?she’s highly likely to be over tired for eg, starting school plus many kids don’t drink enough at school which contributes to accidents /utis.

Can I ask what the symptoms were that prompted the b12 deficiency testing? I have low b12 and I’m wondering if that may be the case for my DD too.

I really do think my husband probably didn’t answer as accurately as would be ideal. He isn’t always the most on the ball as it’s predominantly me who is home with the kids.
