Being a hotel night receptionist.

Hi guys I have moved between Ireland and England a couple of times, as my family is half and half, I have family in both places.

I'm in Ireland and I am now looking to move back to London for a year. I have a lot of admin experience. I know from experience that it can take a while to find a room to rent in London.

So I've decided to be sensible and apply for a job with accomodation included. Ive applied for and been offered a hotel receptionist job in London. It is the night shift.

It has accomodation included which I like. However I have never done night shifts before.

Just wondering what it is like to do night shifts all week. And has anyone done night shifts as a hotel receptionist. What is it like?

I used to be a Senior receptionist in Edinburgh & Manchester many years ago, the role included nights which can be a bit, well, wild!

It entirely depends on the hotel, but mine were both 5* city centre, lots of drink, drugs, sex, arguments, and everything in between! Sometimes it was quiet, but there was often, something... 😬

I think it depends very much who you have in your team an what you're responsible for? It's actually quite a complicated job in terms of closing off the account for the day etc too. Will there be more staff with you?

I had the impression it might be 'sit at a desk whilst people are asleep' - it's very much not that! Sorry if that's not what you were hoping to hear!

I did this at a five star in Brighton, it was the most fun time. But you are actually night manager, security, accountant cashier it's a huge responsibility and I found it quite scary. We had to patrol the building, including underground carpark it's skeleton staff until about 4am when the kitchen staff come in. We were robbed twice, quite a bit of violence and drunken shenanigans and of course sexual assaults after office parties and weddings. If you have a good team and with CCTV these days it is probably safer. I was late 80s early 90s and was pretty unprotected
