What’s going on - toddler being sick every 48hrs

DS3 was sick on Wednesday evening. Didn’t show any signs of feeling unwell beforehand. Nothing else until Friday evening another vomit. Again, 48hrs clear and he’s just been sick again. WTF?
For added info, since this began Wednesday night he has barely eaten but when he’s eaten a very small amount like this evening, he’s thrown up soon after. Drinking fine. Ok in himself other than the not eating. No diarrhoea.
Im not sure what’s going on???? Never experienced a bug where they’re sick every 48hrs before?
Is anyone able to advise please? Got quite an anxious nature so worrying I should be rushing to a&e or something instead of sitting here cuddling him.

Bless him - that sounds awful for him.

Could be a bug that he hasn't fully recovered from, hence vomiting after eating.

Is he managing plenty of fluids?

If you are worried, I would give 111 a call.

I hope he feels better soon.

Softplayismysecondhome · 24/09/2023 19:40

Thankyou for your reply, yes he is drinking ok but absolutely no appetite and the very little he’s eaten he’s brought back up soon after.
every time I think great we’re 48hrs clear - happens again.
not sure at what point I should be getting worried? I don’t want to unnecessarily sit in a&e for hours just to be told it’s a bug and to ride it out (& risk infecting anyone else although strangely neither me, OH or my daughter have it) and to be honest 99% of the time that’s what calling 111 will tell you to do (go to a&e), but equally I’ve never known a bug where a child is throwing up every 48hrs after food? (With no diarrhoea)

Phone 111. If they say a&e then go there

oh my daughter had this when she was 2! lasted for 9 days on and off, it was the weirdest thing - kept thinking she was fine and then she’d be sick again. has he had a recent viral infection or anything? the only thing the doctor could stem hers down to was that she’d had a viral infection a couple of weeks before and he said it could make toddlers temporarily lactose intolerant (no idea how) and she’d been having milk before bed and throwing up etc

I was just about to post this, we had the exact same thing when DS was 2. It went on for a couple of weeks, absolutely brutal. We did end up in A&E at one point as he became a bit dehydrated but as soon as they got some fluids in him he was fine. The doctors couldn't explain why the bug seemed to come and go, but they said the same about temporary lactose intolerance. I was too scared to give him any diary for months after.

My niece had this last autumn. She was only 18 months old. It lasted about 4 weeks. My sister had a newborn too and was at her wits end. Then suddenly she was fine again.

survivalmodemum · 24/09/2023 19:54

My DS gets like this sometimes and each time it turns out to be tonsillitis! Best thing is to phone 111, will put your mind at ease and they won’t send you to A&E if it’s not necessary. Hope he is feeling better soon OP 💕

We had something similar during summer. For everyone else it was very much a 24hr bug. But poor DS who was almost 2 at the time really struggled and took him 10 days or so.

We figured he'd just had some sort of cold/virus a week or so before so it hit him harder than the rest of us.

Softplayismysecondhome · 24/09/2023 19:58

Yes DS does also have a cold! But this throwing up every other day business is really unusual? Googling tells me it could be rotavirus but there’s no diarrhoea so can it actually be that?

My kids have just had this. Started with DS2 2 weeks ago on the monday, he was sick, fine for 2 days, sick again, fine for 2 days then sick again. DS1 & DH were both then sick on the Sunday night. DS1 had the shits all week but wasn't sick for 2 days, and was then sick again. DH wasn't sick again but felt like shit all week. DS3 was sick on the Thursday, then fine for 3 days and then sick again 2 nights on the trot. All the kids were fine in between, and you wouldn't have known they were sick at all.

Oh and I was the only one who didn't have it, thank god!!

TropicalTrama · 24/09/2023 20:02

My DD had similar and it was strep throat. Cleared up quickly with antibiotics.

bettynutkins · 24/09/2023 20:04

My son has this around February time at 2.5. Really freaked me out as every 36-48 hours he was sick again. Then seemed fine. He didn't eat or drink much during that time. I rang 111 who just said to give diralyte and keep fluids up. It did eventually run its course, I think it lasted about a week.

Softplayismysecondhome · 26/09/2023 22:45

Unbelievably DS has just been sick again.
And agaib 48hrs after the last episode of vomiting. So that’s Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and Tuesday like clockwork. What on earth is going on??? For sickness to last this long but to have such a defined pattern to it? I have called 111 and am waiting for a clinician to call me back. I’m terrified he’s got a concussion at preschool and isn’t
able to tell me. Please if there are any medial professionals on here, are you able to advise? Thankyou.

I remember saying exactly the same thing to my mum. Panicking why it was lasting so long. Definitely get some advice if you are worried but as above my son did have exactly the same beginning of the year. Hope it settles soon.

Softplayismysecondhome · 27/09/2023 07:06

@bettynutkins thanks for your reply, a 111 clinician called me back at 2am just to tell me what they tell you for everything, go to a&e if I’m concerned. Was your son sick exactly 48hrs apart as well? Did you ever get to the bottom of what it was?

OP posts:
bettynutkins · 27/09/2023 11:20

Not to the minute. But it was every 2nd evening. I think it happened 4/5 times so about 8 days. It was just put down to a sickness bug, no one else in the household got it though.

I would think he was fine and we were about to get to the 48 hours clearance and then be would be sick again.

bettynutkins · 29/09/2023 20:37

How are you getting on?
