I introduced DS (20) to “The Purple Rose of Cairo” last night and it sailed effortlessly into his top 10.

I said “this must be the last one Farrow did before it all kicked off” and he said “don’t tell me what kicked off, it would spoil it”

Purple Rose of Cairo - Official Trailer - Woody Allen Movie

Set in New Jersey during the Great Depression in 1935, the film tells the story of Cecilia (Mia Farrow), a clumsy waitress who goes to the movies to escape h...

Never liked his films. I'd still watch Polanski though.

Teddleshon · 24/09/2023 13:25

Woody Allen has never been convicted anything and has been already said, some of Mia Farrow’s other adopted children dispute the account of the allegations. Soon Yi was not his stepdaughter as he and Mia Farrow were never married and never even lived together. The age gap between Woody Allen and Soon Yi is not hugely different to the age gap between Mia Farrow and Frank Sinatra when they married.

In Woody Allen’s career of over 5 decades he has never been accused of any inappropriate behaviour to women on any of his film sets.

Midnight in Paris is one of my favourites.

I can separate the art from the artist and feel sorry for those who can't.

Imagine never being able to enjoy the wonders of a Caravaggio painting...

Yes - exactly this. Caravaggio was a murder, so not a person to like. But his paintings were wonderful, and our lives would be greatly reduced without them.
It is entirely possible to separate someone's work from their (alleged) crimes or personal failings.

usedtobeasizeten · 24/09/2023 13:32

Yes.

Boohooz · 24/09/2023 13:39

I love PRC and all other non-terrible Woody Allen films. I don’t believe in avoiding the artist’s work because the artist isn’t a nice person. I’d wager that there are not many historic poets/painters that we’d want to babysit our kids, but their work is still beautiful, like some work by Michael Jackson is beautiful.
And also, I’ve read the evidence from both sides on the allegations against WA and I just don’t believe he’s a child abuser. (But I’m well aware that if I heard somebody say the same right now about Russell Brand I would do an huge eye roll, so there you go).

Absolutely, and several actresses have described his respectful behaviour on set. Whereas you get other men who voice all the correct opinions about equality etc and are rancid bastards to women in real life.

SisterAgatha · 24/09/2023 13:55

I do watch them but only in a way he cannot profit from, so DVDs I already own or resales or library loans

CoffeeCantata · 24/09/2023 14:56

Of course - Broadway Danny Rose is my favourite.

If you reject artists because of their personal lives there'd be no-one left, so just judge them by their creative output.

Richard Wagner: rabid anti-semite
Roald Dahl: horrible misogynist and anti-semite
Evelyn Waugh: appalling snob and all-round nasty person
Charles Dickens: treated his wife (and his young mistress) very badly
Eric Gill (great sculptor): sexually abused his daughters
Gesualdo (renaissance composer): murdered his wife and her lover. Wrote wonderful music

The list is pretty much infinite!

Thank you

Was only reading recently that George Orwell was an awful bastard to his wife and stole her ideas. As a pp said, the list goes on and on.

EachandEveryone · 24/09/2023 16:46

I love most of his films and will go and see this new one it comes out. Never convicted of anything, never had any complaints coming from his film sets, always paid men and women equally. I just think it's a great shame.

paranoidnamechanger · 24/09/2023 16:49

Absolutely. Annie Hall is my favourite and he’s a genius. Looking forward to seeing his latest film at some point.

I never believed the allegations, anyway.

therealcookiemonster · 24/09/2023 18:11

I haven't watched this one, but those I have watched - had a big creep factor. never liked anything by him and found them not enjoyable or entertaining. then when I realised who he is etc. all made sense

I have a very accurate creep/perv radar

BaconAndAvocado · 24/09/2023 18:21

Love WA films.
Grew up with Sleeper, Annie Hall, Play it Again Sam, Manhattan.

More recently, I’ve loved Purple Rose, Bullets Over Broadway.

Hannah and her Sisters is one of my all time favourite films.

Teddleshon · 24/09/2023 19:46

Me too @BaconAndAvocado . During lockdown I introduced my DC’s too his films and I was amazed how well they had stood the test of time, especially the really early ones such as Bananas and Take the money and run. DC’s all now big fans.

Also highly recommend his autobiography, it’s hilarious.

kirbykirby · 24/09/2023 19:57

The only one I like is Match Point.

SmugglersHaunt · 24/09/2023 20:17

I can’t stand Woody Allen, but he has been investigated twice by federal agents in the States and cleared both times. He’s never been arrested, let alone convicted. It’s ridiculous to still be going on about this when there isn’t any proof (or indeed any evidence of any kind) that he did anything wrong. And in regards to Soon-Yi, she didn’t live with him, and while it may be distasteful, it’s not illegal.

Polanski on the other hand is a vile disgusting, convicted rapist who should be clapped in irons.
