The new Guardians of the Galaxy film was utterly depressing? (spoilers)

Only just watched it last night.

Was quite looking forward to it as I found the ones I can remember quite funny/exciting.

Fuck me this was just depressing.

Very little humour. Animals being abused. Kids being trafficked. Weird hybrid people torture experiments.

I didn't even watch the end. After Rocket came back to like I thought it was over but then they started a 2nd round of shite with cages of kids being told to move away from exploding walls.

I thought I'd accidently started watching 'The Sound of Freedom'

I dunno, I just thought it would be lighthearted and funny.

If you've only just watched it then you should have been at least a little aware it was darker than the previous ones. There was a lot around online about how it was darker.

It's also still got its moments of humour and lightheartedness. And the end is full of hope.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 24/09/2023 09:31

Yep, I didnt enjoy it either.

Why would I be aware?

Do you read about every film you watch?

I just got a free trial of Disney+ and put it on.

I knew nothing about it.

Also the sound track was shite!

Well, I do read film reviews. And looks films up online. It's not a weird thing to do at all...

It's been out for ages and there was quite a lot said about how different the tone was and about the depictions of animal abuse

MissBattleaxe · 24/09/2023 09:50

I watched it and didn't have a clue what was going on. I've seen the previous two films and the Marvel crossovers and still found GOTG 3 a huge, pointless, noisy mess.

FallGall · 24/09/2023 10:05

Loved the first one, enjoyed the second one. Gave up after 15 minutes on this one. So boring and weird.

MeridianB · 24/09/2023 10:09

Deeply unpleasant and didn’t last more than 10 mins in our house 😖

SkankingWombat · 24/09/2023 10:13

We enjoyed it. It wasn't the best GOTG, but it was still a couple of hours well used. We were also late to watch it (we'd wanted to see it in the cinema, but hadn't been able to find a good weekend to go around other commitments) and were very aware it was going to be a far less jolly affair, as that was well publicised. DH & I had been a bit worried as we weren't sure if DCs would find it too much, but they had been waiting very impatiently to see it since finding out last year there was another one on the way and the fall out of not watching it would be worse than any upset experienced from the story. We pre-warned them it could be upsetting and braced ourselves for sobbing kids, but we all found although it was quite sad, it wasn't as harrowing as we'd expected based on reviews.

EverybodyLTB · 24/09/2023 10:14

My son burst into tears when we left the cinema, despite me asking him throughout if he was ok with it and offering to leave .Felt gratuitously unpleasant. I hadn’t read any reviews, I (maybe stupidly) thought it would follow a similar tone to the previous films. I’m with you OP I would never watch it again, bawling my eyes out over a CGI raccoon is not entertaining for me!

CreeperBoom · 24/09/2023 10:18

I would say GOTG are my least favourite part of the MCU, but I loved GOTG3. Some parts were uncomfortable to watch, but I liked the way each character got a resolution. Especially Mantis.

LilKiks · 24/09/2023 10:36

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was awful.

I was sat crying holding my dog 😂

I suppose if you're really into Marcel and a set of films you might know the underlying theme of a film before you watch it.

But I genuinely had no real interest in it other than its something to watch on a Saturday night so went in completly blind expecting a light funny film.

My OH put it on as I'd enjoyed the others, by half way through I turned it off. Nasty, depressing, never to be watched again

I think the newer Marvel films are becoming harder to be viewed as purely standalone. To understand everything you do need to have seen all of them, including the different TV series, ideally in order. If you had just randomly chosen it, I could see how it might be dull or hard to follow - a bit like watching the 3rd Lord Of The Rings film without the previous two. I liked that it was a bit more serious, and balanced (for example) the Thor films which verged on a bit too silly by #3.

LilKiks · 24/09/2023 10:54

It wanst just more serious though.

It was down right depressing and distressing.

Tiny, cute animals chopped up and made into robot monsters and repeatedly tortured?

I'd expect that in black mirror, not a marvel film I'd sat down to watch with my 12 yo.

I found it incredibly upsetting and have warned a lot of families not to watch it without caution.

Richvanilla · 24/09/2023 10:56

YANBU.

I'm not massively into Marvel but DH is so we went to see it in the cinema. I'm not really much of a crier, but I literally sobbed through most of the film and for a good couple of hours afterwards. Animal abuse isn't entertainment even if they are CGI. I will NEVER watch it again.

Aside from the gratuitous abuse of raccoons, bunnies, sealions and I've forgotten what the other one was, it was weird anyway. Bouncing around on bits of... Body fat? Man with cheap panda head on.... Bizarre.

DaisyWaldron · 24/09/2023 11:03

I really enjoyed it (and the soundtrack - I was not expecting to hear Purcell in a Marvel film!). Some parts were very upsetting, but I thought that it took the the theme of fatherhood and responsibility from the first two films and made it the core of the Guardians films, and the overall message was positive and hopeful.

bertiesgal · 24/09/2023 11:19

We made the mistake of going to watch it in the cinema on a rare weekend away with just the two of us. We sat in the posh cinema with a bottle of wine to share, feeling full of the joys of a child free weekend and it was so depressing we almost left before the end 🤣. Do not recommend to any couple looking to have a special wee night.

PiddleOfPuppies · 24/09/2023 11:24

I have followed the GOTG series with the DCs since the first one. I absolutely hated this one - it was just gratuitous and nasty, and didn't follow the feel of the rest of the films at all.

Agree.

Didn't get it at all.

I found the worst bit was when they introduced the last planet, interacted with the inhabitants who all seemed helpful and normal and then shortly after the bad guy caused Armageddon and the whole planet was collateral damage. Literally millions/ billions of creatures. I still can't get over it. And it was never mentioned again, they just left. At least the experimented animals with Rocket got a whole story arc.

TinglingTangling · 24/09/2023 19:12

I recently just watched all 3 for the first time too as Iv been unwell and I watched them in bed.

The third was the worst one. I didn’t like it at all.

crackersforcrackers · 24/09/2023 22:25

First one I loved, second one I liked, GOTG3 I really didn't like, it didn't seem to have much humour or quirkiness that made the first 2 stand out in the MCU. But then I think all the films since Endgame (apart from Shang Chi and the Spider-Mans) have been a bit crap which makes me sad as I loved The Infinity Saga.
