99.9% sure that's what's wrong with my scalp - I'm run down so it's flared up

My scalp is so dry and itchy. Definitely not just Head and Shoulders dandruff

I can't even try to get to the GP for 5 weeks (then difficult to gwt an appointment at half term)

I hear the stuff GPs can prescribe is great - can I buy it somewhere?? It's making me feel really shitty 😪

I am not sure what a GP would prescribe, but Nizoral and Neutrogena T-Gel shampoos are both good.

Use an online GP

Or order from an online chemist if you know what it is

yeveamgirl · 23/09/2023 21:51

Have you actually tried head and shoulders? I have really bad eczema and dermatitis. I used the strongest topical steroids on my skin. Started to get the itch so bad on my head that I had weeping sores all over.

Went to go and see a dermatologist and he said that this sort of dermatitis is linked to a sort of hay fever like reaction to the "natural" ingredients in shampoos. I was ordered to stop washing my hair.

I couldn't keep this up for long (although it did help) and I ended up just trying head and shoulders. I've never looked back. It could also be your washing powder causing the reaction. But I had weeping sores on my head for two years before I started head and shoulders, used t gel, nizoral, nothing worked. Only head and shoulders. I even used some of my very strong skin steroids and it did help but made my hair greasy.

NorthernGirlie · 23/09/2023 22:03

I do use Head and Shoulders, I always have the odd patch still but it's worse at the moment, especially behind my ears😔

I just want a magic cure so I don't have to think about it!

I dilute some apple cider vinegar in water and putting it in a spray bottle and spray it directly onto the scaly areas (mainly my scalp) before I go to sleep, in the morning and wash off with a medicated shampoo such as t gel and really rub it in well (have a shampoo brush) to get rid of the flakes. When it is really bad I wear only light coloured tops or patterned because the flakes are so embarrassing ☹️ also I have heard coconut oil is good too although haven't tried that on my scalp. Good luck!

ILikeDinosaurs · 23/09/2023 22:17

Does H&S contain sulfates? I found once I cut them out my scalp (& hair) improved. I also benefited from applying pure organic coconut oil for a few hours before washing my hair.

annonymousse · 23/09/2023 22:43

I have s/d and find the head and shoulders for itchy scalp really helpful. The only other shampoo that works was polytar but it set off dh's asthma. I also use beta cap for behind my ears and patches on my scalp.

WhatNow20 · 23/09/2023 22:46

Capsal or Nizerol (might have spelled those wrong). That's what a dermatologist told me use

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/09/2023 22:52

Nizoral. Not only does it do the trick, it feels soothing. You don't have to use it for ever, just till the current itchiness has cleared.

Teacherteachernicetomeetya · 23/09/2023 22:55

You need Dovobet gel. You can buy it online it’s a steroid oil based treatment and it completely sorts my scalp out for up to 6 weeks after each application.
cover your scalp in it leave it in overnight.
To wash it out don’t use water to start with because the oil based nature of it means it won’t wash out. You need to cover your dry hair in loads of shampoo, rub it around, add more shampoo and then rinse. It was a huge game changer for me.

scoobydoo1971 · 23/09/2023 23:21

I had this awful in my younger years. I was on steroids for a while. I made some adjustments to my diet, and cut out dairy. It really helped. On top, I discovered I was allergic to some products in shampoos like aloe vera. Nizoral was ok but not brilliant. Take cod liver oil capsules daily, and if you have a weekend when you are staying in then do the following. Apply olive oil to your head and massage into scalp. Wrap in towel and let it soak in, ideally overnight. It is very oily and your hair will be very greasy, but that really worked in a flare up. You can remove the oil in a shower.

SandTigerSharkFart · 23/09/2023 23:40

Absolutely Nizoral (Boots sell it) or Selsun (Amazon) Selsun has Selenium Sulfide in it, and that treats fungal infections too, I sometimes wash in the shampoo. Hope you find relief soon, OP!

surreygirl1987 · 23/09/2023 23:42

I get this. Nizoral is the only thing that works on my head. On my face, aside from the prescribed stuff, the only stuff that works on my face is Olay 3-point serum, lots of it.

grumpycow1 · 23/09/2023 23:45

Im having a psoriasis flare on my scalp and it’s shit. T Gel, dovobet keep mine under control. But I might try nizoral on the recommendations here!

jimmymcg · 23/09/2023 23:52

I have just tried T- Gel and it has improved the psoriasis and the keratin lumps, but will try Nizoral next to see if I can get further improvement.

henrysugar12 · 24/09/2023 00:10

Nizoral shampoo cleared up mine. And it's cheaper over the counter than by prescription.

Whatwereyouthinking · 24/09/2023 00:19

I wash my hair with head and shoulders daily and if necessary use the pink shampoo Nizoral stuff (only need that when really run down which causes flare ups). If I skip a hair wash day my forehead starts to get flakey and really sore.

You shouldn’t really use it on your face but some over the counter low percentage hydrocortisone cream clears up my forehead in one application if I’m feeling super stressed and having a bad flare up.

BonnieBairn · 24/09/2023 10:33

My daughter was prescribed betnovate scalp application by the GP and you can buy it over the counter.
