" Presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law"

AIBU to be fed up with people saying that an alleged criminal is "innocent until proved guilty"? That's not what the legal principle is. An alleged criminal is, from a legal standpoint, PRESUMED to be innocent. That's completely different from saying that he hasn't done whatever he's alleged to have done - eg raped someone. He may well have raped someone, but he won't be sent to prison for it unless he's found guilty in a court of law. An alleged criminal can however be held in prison while awaiting trial, despite being "presumed innocent". See this article from a British law firm about what the presumption of innocence actually means:

As the charge and conviction rates for rape are so shockingly low, perhaps more women will start bringing civil proceedings. The burden of proof is much lower in a civil case. See this successful case against 2 footballers, where the Crown Prosecution Service declined to prosecute for rape. I think the victim was awarded £100K.
