Aibu to say we'd probably all take advantage of this scenario but for christ sake have some discretion.

In a&e today for several hours a woman came in an hour or so after me.
After a short while one of the A&e nurses came up to her "hi sue aah didn't know you were in here"
don't worry I'll ask the Dr to see you next.
Everyone in waiting room was like wtaf.

My son has been accused of having preferential treatment before. He doesn’t, he is just well known to staff for a reason

I've explained above that I heard her say the nature of the injury.

Maybe she had an RTA and fell getting out the car.

But for ds with His medical history that would become an emergency. You don’t know the details of anyone else’s medical history

Can work both ways. As a doctor’s child I think I have been seen quicker a couple of times. I’m not sure whether that was because of nepotism or my parents knew what to do treated me at home to point of definitively needing admission.

one dreadful experience- I have shared here before about 16 years old and in for planned surgery. In a cubicle with the door open. Had a drip, couldn’t more. At the nursing station a long discussion about doctors children and privileges like cubicles, probably only a few minutes but it felt like ages. I was crying but silently, course I asked to be moved. Turns out I was there as in for a few days rather than the day cases.

XlemonX · 22/09/2023 21:39

Who are you to judge it is a non-emergency? As healthcare professional we at least know when it is the right time to attend to a&e.
i am in a very niche specialty and there are very few trained staff like us. So for me to take a day off, the consequences are catastrophic. we are talking about leaving ITU patients undiagnosed and untreated or NICU babies in seizure untreated! that kind of scenario.
I am a human too, i also get ill so for me to just jump the queue before those who are not triaged as majors is really not the end of the world

As health care professionals, you'd think going to a&e (and being seen above those waiting) for conjunctivitis (as another poster claimed she know of) was something a health care professional would know better.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/09/2023 21:57

When you're seeing very elderly people wheelchaired in by ambulance staff having to wait it would be crazy not to question nepotism.
I was pissed off yes but so we're the families of those people.
I've done aibu as I think they should have been discreet

My son has a genetic disorder and he frequently goes to A&E. The nurses that looked after him in NICU often work shifts in Paeds so they know who we are. I’m also on first term basis with the receptionist!

We always get seen quicker because they’re all familiar with his condition. You won’t know her medical history and maybe her injured her foot may be a cause for concern. They should have been more discreet but they weren’t. Sorry!

PineappleActivate · 22/09/2023 21:59

Staff sometimes do. I know a few nhs staff. They want to enable them to keep working so they can continue doing their jobs with as least disruption as possible.

gawditswindy · 22/09/2023 22:01

It happens. I have friends with relatives who are in fairly high positions in the NHS and they've been given priority over others in terms of things like cancer screening and extra scans in pregnancy. It's infuriating.

She may not have been telling the truth. She may be on blood thinners or have underlying conditions that mean a fall could be serious. (I am on blood thinners. If I hit my head I could die.)
She may have serious MH issues.
She could need referring onto another department or a specific doctor.
You have no idea what’s going on with others at A and E

My father is on blood thinners he also has copd he still waited 36 hours after being bought in by ambulance before being seen (before anyone has an "aha" moment about my previous post I said my aunt USED to be a nurse and she is his ex wife's sister so manners but no special treatment even when she did work there)

Absolutely agree with this. It 100% happens.

Spacecowboys · 22/09/2023 22:05

The number of people who attend A and E inappropriately is huge. If this could be successfully tackled, no one would have to wait hours on end . Perhaps that should be what everyone in the waiting room focuses on - do I really need to be here, rather than assuming they know what category other patients were triaged into.

How many people who not put their own child forward? How many people would honestly follow a rigid queuing system and let their child wait and wait for cancer screening if they had a chance to speed things up?

What I find annoying and hypocritical is that when it comes to it, people complain not because it happens, but because it doesn't benefit THEM directly.

Very few people are robots and play the "computer says no" card with their own relatives.

If you had an RTA only this morning OP and you're ok to be posting now, you're doing well. I'm glad for you that it wasn't more serious.

true.

If we could do something about GP appointments for a start..People are getting increasingly desperate.

Thanks for the sarcastic concern.
It's muscular pain.
I was seen after 5 hrs and had an x ray.
It wasn't my hand that was damaged so I'm OK to type.

Blimey someone grab this woman a uniform she seems to know more about everyone else's conditions then the staff 🙄

Edited

Rightly or wrongly, it’s pretty obvious what happened.

Streamorwatchlive · 22/09/2023 22:35

Of all the things you could get rageful about. The state of our NHS? Brexit leading to lack of staff? How the tories have destroyed public services?

no, you’re mad because one person got seen slightly quicker than you. Get some perspective and put that same energy into fighting things that matter

stayclosetoyourself · 22/09/2023 22:38

Mostly if nurses/ domestics are injured eg burned or ill on the ward they will probably be seen immediately by the ward Dr briefly who decides if they need AE or not then they might get wheeled down to AE and pretty much seen straightaway then probably go back if recovered or the serious issue ruled out. Drs have access to AE you don't even have to be in the waiting room probably go straight into AE for say HIV test if a needlestick injury etc or might be advice or a quick x Ray.

stayclosetoyourself · 22/09/2023 22:39

It's often a work related injury

We all have a little moan sometimes, it’s ok, you don’t have to be sanctimonious about it.

Hope you’re ok, OP.

Not rageful at all I was just just surprised at the lack of discretion.
