To apply for an RMN job as an RGN?

My dream job has appeared on the recruitment website. Working to help stressed and distressed patients in a large general hospital.
I have skills and experience that are applicable to the role, and a previous post holder had mentioned that I am good at working with these patients (and that they didn’t think it was necessary to be an RMN for this particular role). I feel passionate about the work and would love the opportunity.
Is it worth preparing an application statement and contacting the team tomorrow to state my case? Or is it absolutely hopeless?
Thanks in advance.

i would contact the team leader and have a chat with them definitely. Keen interested people can learn new skills. Good luck.

Is it for a Liaison Psychiatry post? We employ social workers in ours but I think an RGN would be hard pushed to meet the criteria.

If they specifically want a RMN then I wouldn’t apply. You will probably be up against then anyway and would be lower down the pecking order for this job.

Would still have a chat to the team leader about what they’re looking for and whether worth applying. Often these roles can be very hard to recruit for so worth investigating.

Thank you for your answers. It’s not a liaison psychiatry post as such, it’s a specialist Stress and Distress nurse - although I can absolutely see how a psychiatry background would be appropriate. There would be a lot of work with patients with dementia and delirium, which I do frequently in my current role as a specialist liaison MoE nurse. I might contact the team leader tomorrow- while it’s unlikely I’m right for this post, it might be good to express an interest in case any more appropriate roles in the wider team come up. It’s something I feel really strongly about.

D&D in our hospital are a mix of RGN and RMNs, and the RGNs are brilliant. Not heard of this role before though. Always worth a chat though. At the very worst you keep your name in people's minds in a positive way.

It depends on how it is specified in the job description as essential qualifications.

I recruited for a post a while back and would happily have interviewed RGNs but because the agreed job spec was RMN as essential qualification I was told it would have to go back to AGfC if I wanted it changed to just "registered 1st level nurse".

However, it might be that not all trusts are as fussy as mine!

I’d definitely apply or at the very least contact the team leader as you say.
Stress and Distress aren’t specific mental health illnesses and I think an MDT would be invaluable in that role.
I’m a registered Paediatric Nurse but now work as an ENP and see/treat adults too.
If you’re a good fit for the team they should hopefully facilitate further training for you to develop in the role!
