I am going through a bad phase of having takeaways once or twice a week.
Not sure what's happened.
I used to spend more time in supermarkets and now spend more on Takeaways!!
It's so expensive and the apps double the price.
AIBU to think I'm being conned into too many takeaways at crazy high prices??

It's so expensive and the apps double the price.

That's because the platforms take 20-30% from the sale (depends on your deal) + VAT

ronswansonstache · 22/09/2023 13:12

We used to have one a week but have tried to cut back because many of them have been so shit recently! Smaller portions, crappy ingredients, cold by the time they arrive etc.
now we'll get fakeaways from the nicer supermarkets - M&S or Waitrose. Those meals for 2 that come already bagged up are quite good.

We also sometimes get a Gousto or Hello Fresh box & often there are options to go premium for a fancier meal. Tonight we're having a chicken and lamb mixed grill with flatbreads and hummus 😋

I've never understood the appeal of take always.

But OP without being harsh it seems like you are looking for someone else to blame. Surely with some planning and discipline it's a quick habit to break!

Get them apps deleted and write your shopping list. Even make a list of your favourite orders and try cook them yourself, you will be surprised how much nice they are

The appeal to me is a very good curry or Chinese that I could not make as well as the restos. The curry I order via Just Eat (have only very recently started doing this as previous Indian used to have own delivery. The Chinese resto has own delivery.

WandaWonder · 22/09/2023 13:28

So when people can't exercise self control they are now being conned?

Alltheusernamesaretakennow · 22/09/2023 13:30

Never had anything from Deliveroo or Uber Eats. Occasional fish and chips (which we collect!)

Timmytap18 · 22/09/2023 13:30

1 a week. We will be getting an Indian tonight. Zero guilt

BibbleandSqwauk · 22/09/2023 13:32

I pretty much never have them and I have never used the apps. As a pp said if I can't be bothered to cook I make a sandwich or something. If I want Indian, Chinese, etc I buy the supermarket versions.

YABU. Who do you think is "conning" you? Presumably you place the orders under your own free will, knowing the prices, etc?

We've only ever had any kind of takeaway once a month at most, sometimes we can go 2 or 3 months without one, and we always go and collect it ourselves, not risking cold food or wrong orders or overcharging by having it delivered. Never, ever have we used an app or a delivery platform.

Er, well done then I guess?

I don't know how anyone uses the apps at all.

The prices are inflated. Then you pay extra for delivery and then sometimes tip on top.

Way more expensive via the app.

I normally order and then collect as its prices are cheaper if you collect.

Ostryga · 22/09/2023 13:40

We get sushi, sashimi and dim sum delivered every week. We do have an amazing Asian grocer, but I need 10 steamers for the amount we eat and it’s so much easier to get it delivered.

If you can afford it what’s the problem?

Squishedstormtrooper · 22/09/2023 13:44

My bank statement is full of takeaways too and it’s even worse as I live alone so the only person I have to blame is me! There’s a McDonald’s inside my Asda so I’m literally in a place where I can buy actual food and then out I walk with a wrap of the day justifying it as it’s cheap.

It's pretty simple, I pick up my phone, open the app and scroll until I find something I fancy Wink

We (just me and DH, no DC) order maybe 2-3 times a week - usually healthy sushi/pokè/salads etc. We're bloody busy, we don't pay for delivery as we use our Prime account, it's just easy. I will often deliveroo a grocery order as well, ie on Saturday morning we'll get bread/milk/fruit/pastries/food for the rest of the day. It's just so simple and I feel zero guilt. It's just what we do.

These threads always amuse me, so many people see never ordering take away as a badge of honour.

Yabu

BardRelic · 22/09/2023 13:55

How many takeaways on average do you have a month?

Less than one. Maybe two or three a year. I am way outside any delivery areas and getting a takeaway is a bit of a faff, which helps with the self control. It's less effort to cook than it is to get a takeaway, plus I don't like a lot of them. But yes, you've got a weird idea of what being conned is, unless you mean you're tricking yourself somehow.

ActDottie · 22/09/2023 13:59

Yanbu! I have the same issue and I hate myself for it.

Deliveroo just makes it so easy to order exactly what you want straight from your phone. Only way I’ve managed to reduce it is by making sure I have food in and by blocking deliveroo on my phone.

Doggymummar · 22/09/2023 14:05

I never order takeaway. One night a month I go fetch fish and chips. My oh though orders KFC at least twice a week luckily we have separate bank accounts as I couldn't justify it. I have a tin of soup and toast if too tired to cook. 90 seconds in microwave

When I see the price differences via the delivery service I just can't make myself order the food.

I actually physically can't make myself order it. So I'll decide to either cook at home. Or order something for collection from somewhere that's easy to collect from.

It'd not a badge of honour for me,but I just can't justify the extra £5-£15. There's usually a minimum order too.
