Multiple spelling mistakes on a menu

Do spelling mistakes on a restaurant menu bother you?

If you went to a nice brunch restaurant and were paying £17 for 'egs Royale' or £12 for a 'toasted chesse sandwich' or £5 for a 'croissant pasrty with canied lemon' would the spelling mistakes bother you more?

At this restaurant all of the owners and staff speak English as a first language, the menu writer did not use spellcheck before ordering hundreds of copies from the printing company.

YANBU - The spelling mistakes would bother me
YABU - I don't mind

I quite often get flyers through my letterbox from people offering tutorial services for local school children. Woe betide them if I spot spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.

I also comment on the tutor adverts posted on local community sites too. Many of the people in my area don’t have English as a first language and want to support their children through school . I think if they are paying for that service they deserve to have tutors who speak English well enough to spell it correctly and to be warned about the ones who don’t.

A while ago Lidl had a sign for celery storks...

I got caught out by that one, I think it's a branding exercise for little bits of lunchbox celery.

EatYourVegetables · 21/09/2023 18:24

I’d be furious and my brunch would be ruined.

SamW98 · 21/09/2023 18:28

I went to a restaurant once where soup of the day was Crap Bisque

It wouldn't make me not eat there but I would point them out to my partner. I'd assume that the owners were ESL or dyslexic tbh.

I'd also think dyslexic

NancyDrooo · 21/09/2023 18:33

I fantasise about circling the errors in red pen and handing it back.

My mum once made us leave an “authentic” Italian restaurant because the menu had so many spelling mistakes, including lassange and rizotto. I was a very mortified teenager then, but I get it now. Even less of an excuse in this day and age.

IDoughnutKnow · 21/09/2023 18:38

I would judge like mad. I'd also correct the mistakes on my menu.

I think it’s arrogant not to get someone to look at something first before you print loads of copies. My spelling and grammar are good, but I am only human and would get someone I trusted to take a look before I sent documents to print.

Exactly this. It is arrogant to think you know best or it's being scared to admit you don't.
I am ESL, I run businesses. The most important thing is to not be afraid to ask for help or information or guidance. People who don't are the 1year max statistic usually from my experience.

What's the celery stork. I can't work that one out

Stalk

Megifer · 21/09/2023 18:51

"and were paying"

Tbh this bothered me more, I'm sure it's correct but it doesn't sound right in my head 😬

InAndOutOfTheRedBalloon · 21/09/2023 18:53

I can forgive instances where people have clearly been caught out by spellchecker - DH and I had a lovely meal at a restaurant where they offered "Sirlion" steak, and once sang "away in a manager". But things like "egs", "chesse" and "lasange" makes me wonder if they're paying any attention at all to what they're reheating cooking.

Missedmytoe · 21/09/2023 19:09

I once saw offered on a menu (chalkboard kind of thing) "Treale sprong"

AmIAutumnalNow · 21/09/2023 19:16

Thank you @HangingByYourFingernails

I just couldn't figure that one out

Rightthere · 21/09/2023 20:20

@MonumentalLentil , @viques , I did say “completely unreasonably” 😉

Newgolddream70 · 21/09/2023 21:39

There was a restaurant in Barnet years ago with one of those chalk boards outside that advertised a dish served with 'boilet or roat potatoes'. I think of it every time I cook potatoes 😆

UnNiddeRides · 21/09/2023 22:44

If I’m cooking beef for Sunday lunch it’s always called bef as a local café had bef sandwich on their menu. Similarly scrambled eggs are ‘shrabbled’ as was on a menu in Greece.
Usually I find typos/spelling errors funny. I’d probably not worry about it, try the food & base my judgment on that. I think that you can find the hygiene rating online if you’re concerned that crap spelling or proofreading equals potential health risks.

IVFfirsttimer91 · 21/09/2023 22:46

Oh I find it really annoying!! With one exception, we used to go to a Thai place throughout my childhood where they spelt Garlic Chicken as Gralic Chicken. We still refer to it as Gralic Chicken now and were most upset when they updated the menu and spelt it right!

msmonstera · 21/09/2023 23:01

Hate it and judge.
Remember the picture some years ago which went viral? Someone was at a wedding which had labelled 'Roast Stuffed Aborigine' as the vegetarian main course 🙄

BusinessClass · 21/09/2023 23:04

One near me offers a 'full engerlish'

JMSA · 21/09/2023 23:05

It wouldn't give me the best first impression! I honestly cannot understand such lack of attention to detail.

PedantScorner · 21/09/2023 23:07

@Gowlett , the Ceaser spelling looks more like how you say it.

MancePlaner · 21/09/2023 23:11

I would worry that their slap dash attitude extended to expiry dates and refrigeration

UnctuousUnicorns · 21/09/2023 23:15

ScottBakula · 21/09/2023 16:55

I wonder if they got them from here 😄https://www.chocolate-lodge.co.uk/shop/chocolate-mice/

£1.70 each??! We used to get them from the shop for twopence when I was a kid. Inflation, eh!

catwithflowers · 21/09/2023 23:16

I'm very judgemental about spelling on a menu. Just get someone to check it over who can spell. It's not hard 🤔. It gives a very poor first impression in my opinion.
