Not letting people cut in line….

Short one

Basically when people don’t look to check if there’s a queue when I’m in a shop waiting at the checkout and just walk in front of me, I’ll say “Excuse me, there’s a queue” or “Excuse me, I’m also waiting for the checkout”, or something to that effect.

My husband always gets embarrassed and tells me to let it go and “live and let live”.

Everanewbie · 21/09/2023 14:47

YANBU as long as you don't go flying in with size 10s if they've made a genuine mistake.

Wowzawow · 21/09/2023 14:49

No no definitely not, I always believe when they apologise and acknowledge their mistake and I’ll tell them not to worry and give them a smile, everyone has days where they’re just in a world of their own, and that’s perfectly fine.

I don't let people push in. Had a run in at a packed tube the other day. Young bloke swanned past the huge queue and tried to beep on the turnstile before me, obvs thinking I was a slow old lady (😂). Like lightning I beeped my card before him, reaching my hand under his.

He was affronted and said incredulously "really? how petty !" I turned round , gave him a withering stare and responded "maybe, but at least I have manners and know how to queue".

People behind me grinned. I strode off, happy in my petty victory 😬. The entitled little shit.

Conversely if I'm not in a hurry at supermarket I'll offer for people behind to go first if they have a small basket.

Graciebobcat · 21/09/2023 15:37

That's fine. I've had it said to me, genuinely didn't notice, and I've said it to others.

mumtroubles · 21/09/2023 15:41

I wouldn’t call someone out, not least cos it happens more and more now. What I do often do is encourage people go in front of me if I’m going to slow them down (good deed and also don’t like feeling pressured putting up a whole trolley if someone’s standing with a little basket/clearly on their lunch break). One thing I do mind is when I very occasionally fuck up and don’t notice (say it’s a shop I don’t usually go into or a bendy queue up an aisle) and someone gets really snippy about it. Just a cheery ‘hiya this is the queue!’ It’s like why doesn’t the universe know I’m a very forgiving queuer 😂 as long as people are nice, it’s all good.

CaroleSP · 21/09/2023 15:46

I'm happy to let people in front if as the pp said they've only a small basket/clearly on lunch etc as i usually have a trolley full but I did object once when an elderly man pushed past me and said "you don't mind do you?"

LetMeGoogleThat · 21/09/2023 16:03

YANBU I do the same.

I will also always offer for the person behind to go ahead if they only have 1/2 things and I have trolley full........unless they scowl and huff and puff before I get chance........Then I go a bit slower.

GingerIsBest · 21/09/2023 16:08

YANBU.
Queue jumpers is one of my absolute pet peeves.

When I was nearly pregnant and in that first trimester of exhaustion, I was commuting daily to the City. I took the Waterloo and City line which, for non londoners info, has only 2 stops - Waterloo and Bank. So it turns up at Waterloo empty, everyone gets on, one stop and we all get off again. It's obviously always rammed at rush hour. People who get on first then also get seats, and the rest of the crowd shuffles in, filling all available spaces as usually there's still people waiting on the platform. Normal ettiquette would suggest, you'd think, that if you were one of the ones who got on last and have now had to stand the whole way, the one benefit is that you will get off first. Certainly, in 99% of cases, this is how it works....

On this occasion, I was standing in the bit between the seats. The train pulled up and stopped and this man attempted to stand up and push his way off the train ahead of me. I pushed my arm out to grab hold of the pole next to him, basically blocking him in and snapped, "You had a nice comfy seat the whole way, now you wait for the rest of us." Cue lots of snickers from other standing commuters!!!!

Would not normally do that but I think the pregnancy exhaustion and rage had kicked in!!!

Never EVER go to DisneyLand Paris, that place is one giant queue with many families feeling 8-15 person families have the right to jump past those who’ve waited hours. I feel your pain OP.

Strange, one of the things I loved about Disney Paris was all the nice young people speaking 100s of different languages who were constantly shepherding potential queue jumpers away so that I didn't have to! It was the most relaxing queuing experience I've had in years! Grin.

Freezingcoldinseptember · 21/09/2023 16:15

Literally today I was in a chippy queue.. It has and in door and an out door. 3 of us in the in line and he walked in the out door to the front. The staff member asked him if he was from the queue.. He said no and what did she want him to do join the back of the in queue..? She looked awkward so I said yes that pretty much the idea.... He was fuming!

cstaff · 21/09/2023 16:16

Generally I hate queue jumpers and will either give them a dirty look or say something. The other day I was in a supermarket with just two items and the lady in front was just about to unload her full trolley and let me go past - really nice gesture, which I have done myself on occasion.

CrazyHamsterLady · 21/09/2023 16:18

@pleasefuckinggodno I was literally just about to mention DLP!!! Went there earlier this year and it was a nightmare. I even complained the Disney and just got a generic email back saying that they ‘take queue jumping very seriously blah blah blah’ Yeah right.

Some boy tried to shove in front of me on one of the rides and said to his parents ‘Mummy, they’re not moving’ I just though, I don’t care if you’re 10, I’m not moving! I tried to stop another guy but he just kept saying ‘my wife’s at the front’ and just barged past hundreds of people.

Must calm down 😥 I’m off to WDW Florida in two weeks, hoping it’ll be better there or maybe I should sharpen my elbows!

Whataretheodds · 21/09/2023 16:19

Letting people go in front is all very well if you're the only person waiting. It annoys me if people in front of me don't challenge people jumping ahead of them

StepAwayFromGoogling · 21/09/2023 16:26

What is queue jumper in French please? Need to know ahead of a trip to DLP. I've also heard staff are hot on it if you let them know.

Smellslikesummer · 21/09/2023 16:31

Haha I love the W&C because (usually) people are so well behaved!! I always thought is was because there is a good chance someone you worked with / work with / will work with is in the carriage.

Smellslikesummer · 21/09/2023 16:33

I don’t believe there is a noun (I’m French), you would say ‘quelqu’un ne respecte pas la queue’ or ‘il est passé devant nous’ (someone is not respecting the queue system / he cut in front of us).
Happy to be corrected though, I lived in the UK for the past 10y, my Fr vocabulary is not what it used to be.

IfOn · 21/09/2023 16:40

Honestly if it's just one person I just let it go. It's not that serious to me. Most of the time I don't think the person realizes there was a queue.

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 21/09/2023 16:42

Depends. Is there anyone else in front or behind you? If there isn't, where are you standing? I've seen people standing at some random point 20ft away from the cash desk and expect others to know they're 'queuing'. If it happens to you a lot, it's probably you who doen't know how to queue.

Us too. April bank holiday weekend? The unofficial fast pass system was predominantly French, Belgian and Spanish families. I flagged to the staff watching the queues and they did absolutely nothing on three separate occasions. Despite clearly having cctv footage of it all. I thought it was revolting to watch adults push past 5 year olds. Certainly shat all over the ‘most magical place in the world’ vibes. 🤣
I shan’t be going to Florida…

When did you go? Apparently some dates are worse than others - like April bank holiday - which is a religious holiday for most of Europe.

Florida is nothing like DLP, so that is where you should have gone. DLP is not magical one bit.

Least magical place I’ve ever been and the staff are SO rude, it’s very unfortunate. I don’t think the French are very well placed to deliver the Disney concept.
