Periods/anaemia/this isn’t normal is it

Last blood test I had …

Ferritin 12 / Heamoglobin 109

Diagnosed as anaemic. Dr said it was heavy periods causing it but I said I didn’t think they were that heavy but now on earth are you to know what’s normal when you only have your own experience to go on?

Anyway, started period yesterday. Got up this morning and could feel it gushing out, managed to get to bathroom where it literally poured out of me like a tap, splashed all over the tiles, all down my legs, toilet looked like a crime scene. If I didn’t know better I’d think I was haemorrhaging. So safe to say this isn’t normal is it???

im not asking for personal period stories, I’m not a troll, I’ve name changed for this. I just want to confirm that this isn’t normal in a period

This is what my periods are like and I'm constantly anemic. Gyne said normal and they don't care. Also offered marina. I said no because I couldn't have it inserted (trauma) unless they were prepared to do it under general, which they said no to. So I was told I was denying treatment and there isn't anything they can do.

Very similar to me. I was basically told that unless I tried the Mirena first then they wouldn’t refer me for any further treatment or investigation.

Great blackmailing technique there to stop women getting the gynaecological help they need…..

I had some kind of test last year (can’t remember the name but it was like a smear only with a screen up and a consultant etc) I was found to have multiple cervical cysts (again can’t remember the name of them) but consultant said they were normal and nothing to worry about!?

Definitely not normal. I've never leaked through a tampon or pad due to heavy flow but SIL has PCOS and has very heavy bleeding. Are your periods regular?

I had anemia during my last pregnancy and I felt dead on my feet I couldn't leave the house for several weeks as I was too weak, the symptoms came on suddenly at 30 weeks even though looking through mu bloodwork I'd been borderline at 12 weeks.

Get on iron before the symptoms catch up with you. Your ferritin is very low too.

I was like this. Suspect fibroids as rubs in my family but no scans or test to investigate cause were offered. Nothing worked to lessen them even transamic acid. I could bleed through a mooncup and period pants in a short time. I was on high dose iron.
Doctor suggested mini pill a year ago and I’ve not had a period since. I feel amazing not being tired and washed out!
I know people who haven’t been able to tolerate one type of hormone have been ok with another so maybe worth looking into the various options.

This thread is making me grateful (and slightly amazed) at my GP for going directly to referral.

Wonder if it’s because I’d mentioned that my birth mother had been treated for some kind of uterine cancer (literally the only bit of family medical history I have).
