Anyone sold their car on Motorway.com?

User5512 · 20/09/2023 20:23

Never sold a car before. So looking for advice.

We’ll be listing tomorrow on Motorway (mainly for convenience and decent price). What happens after a deal is agreed?

  1. Do I get paid before the dealer collects the car?
  2. At what point does the ownership transfer and how? Will I still be liable for a few days until the ownership transfers?
  3. can I cancel insurance on the car next day after the dealer collects it?
  4. what personal documents should I give to the dealer? Why do they need my driving license?
  5. anything I should be careful about?

grateful for any relevant advice, thank you

They gave really clear step by step instructions. Really rate them.. I was paid by transfer once car seen by buyer.

User5512 · 20/09/2023 20:34

how do you transfer ownership?

If I sell and the dealer collects the car (after payment), who is liable after the dealer leaves with the car? Does the ownership still remain with me until DVLA transfers V5C?

How do I ensure there is paperwork to prove I sold the car?

Be warned. They get you down on the ‘agreed price’. Find every little scra5ch and dent. Probably look at your insurance ( somehow they knew m6 had has been spray painted). Yes they check you are at the address on your DL and that it matches to the address on your V5. Once they pay the ownership goes to them and your are no longer responsible for insuring it. You post off the V5 slip to DVLC just like any sale. HTH. You could do a makeshift invoice or write on a piece of paper sold car make model registration number to ‘XXXX’ on DATE for the sum of £XXXX ‘sold as seen’.

Whatsherusername · 20/09/2023 21:16

Just sold one of our cars, being picked up Friday, make sure you take photos of every little scratch and dent possible, got a £1000 more than from we buy any car :-)

amanda171 · 21/09/2023 21:28

I've sold twice with Motorway - they exceeded everyone on price - and I checked all the usual sites, even driving to a couple of them for them to view. I was not knocked down on price either. Make sure you declare any damage. I gave both a thorough clean inside and out before taking the photos to upload to Motorways site. The log book that you have with your car they give you the slip back with their details on which you post back to DVLC just like any car sale. I cancelled the insurance as soon as they left. Money is transferred to you before they take the car.

Thementalloadisreal · 21/09/2023 21:47

Is that a legit website? I used its ULEZ assessment tool and it told me my car isn’t compliant but the actual Govt website said it is so I assumed the website is scammy

HansSolo22 · 21/09/2023 21:55

Used them a couple of years ago and couldn’t fault them to be honest. They did ask for a slight reduction as the parcel shelf was missing (to be fair, it was, I just hadn’t realised). Nice fella came and did all the necessary paperwork and money was transferred. You just fill out and send off the new ownership thing as with any sale. I would definitely use them again.

THisbackwithavengeance · 22/09/2023 05:42

I used them to sell an old car. Also couldn't fault. Had out the car on Fb marketplace initially and took the listing down 4 days later as was inundated with messages from chancers, pisstakers and tyre kickers.

Put it on motorway and got a higher price almost straight away. In fact DH and I still can't believe we got as much as we did for it.

The actual transfer itself was no hassle at all. I can't remember the ins and outs but they tell you exactly what to do and it's stress free and easy.

Would highly recommend.

How would that work: "they" get you down on the agreed price?

Motorway introduce you to one of hundreds of car dealers - it's one of those dealers who views and buys your car and potentially knocks the price down when you inaccurately described its condition.

AllyCart · 22/09/2023 05:58

Forgot to add - we sold one of our cars via Motorway a few weeks back. The dealer who bid for it and came to get it was from 150 miles away but it was painless. They came and inspected the car on the driveway then transferred the previously agreed amount directly to our bank before taking it away.

With regard to insurance, you need to cancel it immediately that they take the car. You don't want 'your' insurance to be responsible for a claim once it's no longer your car - and yes, if your policy is still running and for some reason whoever bought it doesn't have valid insurance there can be an issue. Some people will be convinced it doesn't matter. It does.

Bdhegdjeob · 22/09/2023 05:59

I was going to sell on Motorway but Big Wants Your Car outbid them. I was paid before they went off the drive (all done within 24 hours).

they start the transfer of ownership immediately

you can cancel the insurance when they collect it as no longer liable

they need your licence to make sure you are a genuine seller as they are about to pay you for the car

autienotnaughty · 22/09/2023 06:03

I tried this . I wanted 5k minimum (valued at 6k) all the offers I got were 4k. I took it off and sold it privately for 5k. Complete faff and waste of time.

They measure the thickness of the paint and that tells them whether it has been repainted. Very clever stuff.

PickledPurplePickle · 22/09/2023 07:09

We used them, fantastic and no hassle at all

Shade17 · 22/09/2023 07:46

Started to use them once and found the process straightforward but ultimately WBAC offered us £2.5k more so we sold it to them.

User5512 · 19/10/2023 18:47

I sold the car with Motorway last week. Smooth experience. Got a great price too.

Totally recommend !!

Sorry quite new to this …

Do they test drive the car beforehand? I think I’d want my husband to deal with all of that as not keen on having a stranger driving me around in my car.

Also has anyone had a bad experience after payment given to you? E.g. them claiming the car is damaged after they’ve taken it and driven off like dents scratches etc - guessing it is sold but wary of scammers trying their luck playing silly games to get money back just want an easy life and no issues ideally

foobio · 03/11/2023 21:50

Ultimately it's an auction site, so people will have totally different experiences depending on who has the winning bid. I agree with the PP who advised to detail every single dent or scratch, if you miss something then the eventual buyer can try to knock you down on price - ours tried to lower the offer when they came to collect. He was not pleasant to deal with but he was just the buyer so not a reflection on motorway themselves.

Exact same for me, sold twice and had no problems and the best price.

The buyers are businesses not general public so not the same risk as eBay etc.

Just be completely honest and accurate when declaring the condition and any damage for the listing.

It's amazing how many people think scratches and dents are normal and don't need to be declared but that's what results in you not getting the original quoted price from buyers on Motorway or WBAC etc.

User5512 · 04/11/2023 07:23

Our car was in great condition and we declared every single scratch/dent.

The dealer who bought the car didn’t want to test drive. They towed the car away. This was surprising as we sold a good condition family car - 7yr old Ford Focus with no previous owners!

I know this is an old thread but if any of you are still around …

I’m looking at selling to Motorway. The car is pristine in terms of body work and is a hi spec, low mileage, top of the range 4x4 - albeit 12 yrs old.

The thing is, it’s developed a couple of funny noises when I drive it.

How would Motorway deal with this? If they don’t test drive it and possibly tow it away, they won’t know this til later, possibly much later.

Any tips/insight? Thanks

mateysmum · 29/03/2024 18:04

It's individual dealers who bid so they will do things their own way. The guy who bought my son's car did take it for a short test drive. I think it's important to be honest but many dealers won't care if they think its just a minor fault that they can fix.
I was really pleased with the price we got and it was a pretty smooth process.

Mynewnameis · 30/03/2024 07:56

They man who collected only drove it around the block.
It had to drive it before he arrived as brakes had been sticking. Not a fault just car was unused.
If they detect the noise they may try and negotiate on price. I was knocked down a small amount for paint chips I thought were dirt.
