I saw this article about Chris Evans having skin cancer removed. He mentions in the article time is of the essence and to get symptoms checked out - good advice of course but practically is that possible any more?

it's great that he got early intervention, but I've spent the last two weeks trying and failing to get a GP appointment for a fairly urgent matter.

I wonder what the experiences of "ordinarily people" ie those without the wealth to give access to private medical care are like? It doesn't mention in the article if he was treated on the NHS

Im not really looking at it from a political angle ( NHS has obviously been ran into the ground) I am interested to hear of peoples experiences - was it a battle to get seen etc

My AIBU is " I don't think you or I as a person reliant on the NHS would have had a similar experience to Chris, esp post pandemic"

Chris Evans tells listeners he is now cancer free

The Virgin DJ said he had undergone surgery last week and received "excellent news" on Tuesday.

@CurlyhairedAssassin sorry, but it sounds like your hospital is just badly run. I bet ours gets no more money per capita than yours.

Not to play down BCC but in Australia I barely know anyone who hasn’t had at least one BCC removed, and lots of people who have a few taken off every year.
But if Chris Evans said his cancer had metastasised and moved then presumably it wasn’t a BCC but also wasn’t melanoma if he had no further treatment if it had already spread?

BCC can spread and metastasise. It’s rare but it can and does happen. I know someone who died of it.

There are lots of studies that show that NHS care is very area dependent with better care bring received by people in more affluent areas. Sadly I suspect many well off mumsnetters in the south experience a very different NHS to those of us in more deprived areas further north.

And no, suspected cancer is not always dealt with quickly on the NHS.

From listening to my parents and patients cancer treatment is vvv quick so similar to Chris Evans experience.

londonrach · 22/09/2023 07:43

I'm in the Midlands and it's quick here, my parents in a different area and quick there.

My mum was showing classic signs of colon cancer for over a year and the GP didn't refer her. She died suddenly in April after the tumour necrotised. We have many questions.
