Grange Hill!

I watched The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Lost Boys and more, but Grange Hill was an absolute no-go!

Same! All the Hammer Horrors I watched a young age (like from 7 yo), V was my favourite tv show. My mum watched Eastenders from the beginning and didn't object to me watching it. But Grange Hill? No!

Maybe she thought as it was set in a school I'd copy the behaviour at school. Who knows? 🤷‍♀️ I watched it anyway, being a latchkey kid from a young age. And wouldn't have ever dared misbehave at school.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/09/2023 18:33

I wasn’t allowed to watch Tiswas. Which was weird considering no one seemed to bat an eyelid if I was still up/came downstairs and The Rockford Files, Kojak or, more often than not, The Sweeney was on. Weird 🤷‍♀️

CheshireCat1 · 20/09/2023 18:34

We didn’t have a TV

Theblackdogagain · 20/09/2023 18:36

When I was little no itv and no adverts
Older my dad told me never to watch a horror film with a child in as its wrong, I think I've kept that one up.
We were a sat tv morning family, my dad loved dungeons and dragons cartoon and learned how to play the theme tune.

Cookerhood · 20/09/2023 18:43

Monty Python's flying Circus.
Jackie magazine.

SaltyCrisps · 20/09/2023 18:54

Coronation Street wasn't allowed :)

TheLeadbetterLife · 20/09/2023 18:59

My dad actively encouraged me watching comedy that I was too young for (Monty python, Mary Whitehouse Experience - ironic!), but he disapproved of pretty much all children’s TV, declaring it idiotic.

Still watched it though.

The only kids’ TV presenter he liked was Andy Crane.

We also used to watch all sorts of films that we were far too young for, but that was standard in the 80s and 90s I think.

Mumof2teens79 · 20/09/2023 19:00

Banned from watching eastenders when Kathy was raped....haven't watched since.

LittleRedYarny · 20/09/2023 19:01

I feel a tad disappointed in my mum, I didn’t get any of these restrictions. She let me watch Eurotrash with her when I started secondary school circa 95-96… To be fair it led to many open and honest conversations on sex/relationships/consent etc that have stood me in good stead over the years.

I think the only time she suggested something wasn’t age appropriate was at about 9-10 when I found a copy of Jilly Coopers Riders in a charity shop… then again you can’t put a book that is evidently horsey in the eyeline of a pony mad girl and think she won’t read it for tips on classical riding techniques…

Edited

I had very similar comedy exposure, I blame it for warping my sense of humour so I had more in common with my teachers than my peers.

I remember watching Eddie Izzards Glorious and then finding top shop sold a similar style suit at 13 and buying it. I loved that suit and and it broke my heart when I grew out of it.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 20/09/2023 19:06

Heartbreak High. And I was grounded for going to see Austin Powers 😁

bombastix · 20/09/2023 19:07

Ha! ITV. Coronation St was permitted.

This was in the age of 4 channels mind you.

VeridicalVagabond · 20/09/2023 19:08

I don't remember there being any restrictions really. Definitely watched some stuff that was not "age appropriate", I've loved horror since I was young and my older brothers would always let me watch with them.

Only time I ever remember being told categorically "nope you're not old enough" was when I was browsing my mum's shelves for a new book when I was about 9 or 10 and picked up Jilly Cooper's Riders. I had that snatched right out of my hands with an "absolutely not!" I still haven't read it!

2weekstowait · 20/09/2023 19:08

There wasn't anything that I was discouraged from watching that I expressed an interest in. Could basically just watch anything that was on TV. And whatever my parents were watching, which I was often captivated by but also found scary and couldn't sleep!

Esgaroth · 20/09/2023 19:09

Power Rangers. Mum thought it would encourage us to play violent fighting games in the school playground. It was on way before they were up on a Saturday, though, so we just watched it with the volume low. And we did play Power Rangers at school!

LovingMyLiver · 20/09/2023 19:13

I was never allowed to watch Brookside

SwedishEdith · 20/09/2023 19:16

ITV
Any telly on a Sunday until the evening. Tbf, there wasn't much worth watching

itsgettingweird · 20/09/2023 19:19

Gremlins 🤣🤣🤣

Generally they weren't strict at all over viewing content but for some reason my mum would not allow us to watch this!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 20/09/2023 19:24

Another one banned from watching Eastenders, I used to get a mate to record it for me.

Also Top of the Pops after Morrissey ripped his shirt off and had "Will you marry me" written across his chest. Not sure what the problem with that was!

Flufferblub · 20/09/2023 19:24

My mum didn't like me watching Bottom, but I watched it with my dad and brothers when she was out. I was about 6. We bonded over laughing at episodes of Bottom.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 20/09/2023 19:36

10HailMarys · 20/09/2023 17:36

@VeterinaryCareAssistant I really need to know why Dad’s Army and Bedknobs & Broomsticks weren’t allowed. They are the gentlest and least offensive things ever to grace a screen!

@10HailMarys My dad was of the opinion that they were mocking the war which was not a laughing matter.

bombastix · 20/09/2023 19:39

Oh yes Top of the Pops was banned. Too sexy or something.

Also no Jim'll Fix It. No reason given.

@Theblackdogagain I loved Dungeons and Dragons. I loved the baby unicorn.

With hindsight, it appears they made the correct decision! Perhaps they already had the measure of him!
