To not want to give out bags of tat at birthday party?

DS is having a party for his 5th birthday next week. 25 kids and I’ve just been adding party bag fillers to my Amazon basket, there is now £100 worth of the usual crap in my basket ready to purchase….surely I can get something better for £4 per kid?

im trying to avoid sweets as 3 of the kids attending are type1 diabetic so thought it would be easier to have non-edible party bag contents.

We did books - the 10 for £10 really were lovely books plus a slice of Birthday cake. 🎂

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/09/2023 06:32

+1 for Hobbycraft sets. Or Lego polybags - can be under £3 each with some sleuthing. Or books. Or a sweet cone. Or baker ross sets (keyring making or similar, dream catchers). I’m with you - anything but plastic shite.

sparkedsparkle · 21/09/2023 06:37

A lot of people opt to do a few sweets, book, mark making tools, bubbles. Tbh nobody wants the plastic tat anymore. My ds went to a birthday party and recieved a personalised draw stringbag, a book and a pencil

AnneValentine · 21/09/2023 06:38

Etsy, we did name key rings for that price that they put on their book bags.

cassy16 · 21/09/2023 06:41

You don’t even need to personalise them they are really useful after and you can order the tags of Etsy and the bottles are £1 in Asda

i Hate the works books, my DS got given a wad of them by his grandparents and they’re just rubbish!

cassy16 · 21/09/2023 06:51

If you or any one has a cricut machine to make names if not you can order vinyl names for really cheap on eBay or Etsy and do a personalised football for each child they are really cheap in sports direct the one in this pic is a bit tacky but just so you get the jist girls love footballs too

Bathbombs always go down well.

Thehop · 21/09/2023 07:16

I have everyone a book. £1 each

Iamlikesorry · 21/09/2023 07:54

One year, I gave a small group of 13 year old boys a family sized Cadburys bar each tied in a purple ribbon. They loved it!

We used to get Julia Donaldson sets, Harry & His Bucket of Dinosaur sets, Enid Blyton sets, David Walliams sets etc from the works.

Not sure how all those classics can all be rubbish. Maybe you just don’t like books..?

Lots of kids we know only have showers in their flats, not baths. So probably depends on the type of homes the kids live in as to whether this is a good choice.

Sammi89 · 21/09/2023 08:03

Grow your own grass heads! I did that and all the kids loved it and all the parents appreciated it and some are still growing 6 months on! 😆

SylvesterandTweetyPie · 21/09/2023 08:26

I did this a few years ago. Were well received.

crumblylancs · 21/09/2023 08:37

I've never seen a happier kid than one with a bag full of tat launching a sticky figure at the walls or blowing a shitty whistle!

BoyMamma2 · 21/09/2023 08:56

we done books one year, water bottle we got for £2 each another, and a giant bouncy ball another year. This year we did a share bag of sweets and cake. They’re older now though.

Don’t do it! Someone on here recommend The Works Book collections of 10 books, 1 per child. https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/childrens-book-collections/hairy-maclary-and-friends-10-kids-picture-book-bundle/WKS_9780241527412.html
Maybe add another gift like a bubble wand and job done!

@LadyB49 this is such a good idea. Was it well received by other parents?

Growingouttogether · 21/09/2023 09:00

A couple of Temporary tattoos, bubble wand a cupcake. My kids would be in heaven

Peachyscream · 21/09/2023 09:01

The works have small tote bags with a picture on, comes with felt tip pack. You could get one each and then put bubbles/playdoh inside
Or get paper bags (patterned) from ebay and get tiny plush animals to put inside as a blind bag. Amazon has sets of 30. put them in a cardboard box and they pull one out as they leave.

Books sound lovely (I'm aghast at the lone hater of books who puts them in the recycling.. at least pass them on or give to charity), as do balls or bubbles

If everyone is buying 10 for £10 at The Works don't kids end up with several copies of the same book?

LollipopChaos · 21/09/2023 09:09

There's nothing worse than receiving a bag of tat after a party and then having to wait a few weeks for child to forget it so it can go straight in the bin.

I refused to do it at my kids party and also the silly sweets per layer in pass the parcel. Each child received a sweet at the end so some didn't end up with more sweets than others.

JessieJoJames · 21/09/2023 09:09

We gave a piant your own rainbow from Hobbycraft, a little pack of pencils, slide of cake and a chocolate bar. Far better than tat.

Also, just my opinion, but seeds are useless and never get used and everyone has those works books so there is a high chance of duplicates.
