To be fed up at the number of times a term dd has to dress up?

So far this school year, dd has had to go to school dressed as an edwardian school child, in traditional indian costume, as what she wants to be when she grows up, a nursery rhyme character (she choose incey wincey spider fgs) and now this friday her favourite character from a book (Pippi Longstocking). Then on top of this she had to be a scarecrow for the harvest assembly, a pig (don't ask) for the christmas assembly and a spring flower for last weeks mothers' day assembly. I seem to be constantly buying stuff and spending hours making these costumes to be worn for a short period of time then are totally useless.

SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT cue running round like headless and demented chicken!!

I'm with you there ComeOVeneer- though thankfully ds is in yr 6 and I think (fingers crossed) we've done our last !

What about the day they had to wear something yellow...DD will only wear pink!

And the day we had to send them in with a vegetable

And a day we had to send in fruit

And the book character day, and etc etc

It is a pain but the kids love it and DD was so happy she had the "best" princess outfit.
As I spent 3 days making it and it was taffeta and silk it bloody should have been!

Kbear · 04/03/2008 17:00

My DD wants to go to school on Thursday as a humpback whale - beat that.

more grrrrring from the kbear!

kerryk · 04/03/2008 17:07

kbear you have to admire her imagination.

Kbear · 04/03/2008 17:10

actually, child confusion, it's my whale mad DS that wants to go as a humpback whale - from The Snail and the Whale. We have even been told by the school which author the character must be from - beat that too. Julia Donaldson (Gruffalo etc) is Year One's author.

PITA

The trouble is you can't let the children do their own creative costumes as everyone else at school looks like their outfit has come from a theatre production company.

Its not just the costumes its all the papermache pyramids and owls etc that you end up having to do too.

What do the kids from less wealthy families do then, just not dress up? Sounds a bit expensive to me, but I suppose you can get things from charity shops. And the rest is what, cardboard?!

ComeOVeneer · 04/03/2008 17:29

She does get involved, but I still have to do a fair amount of it. It just seems so wasteful as well, buying material/clothes etc just to use for one day, or in the case of assemblies for about 1 hour!

Agree with OP 10000%

WBD is come as your favourite character.

'Favourite' character either has nothing visible to distinguish it from any other ordinary boy or girl or is a total headache to recreate and can't be removed for PE and the toilet

Dc comes out all ratty, costume in bits, or in the case of dd last year bursting for the toilet cos she didn't go all day.

ComeOVeneer · 04/03/2008 17:45

The other ridiculous thing is they never seem to take into account the time of year. DD was dressed in a sari type outfit in November!

oh yes the note from school said "please dress up as a monkey, humpbackwhale whatever but please make sure your child can go to the toilet/go out to play/sit down in assembly (not word for word obv but you get my point)

GRRRRRRR

agnesnitt · 04/03/2008 22:34

My daughter has decided that she wishes to go to school as Hermione Granger for World book day. Bonus! Her school uniform is grey so I just need to acquire some black fabric to make a robe for over the top. Gotta be loving Harry Potter obsessed four year old girls

That really is a lot of dressing up. Just book day used to get up my nose.

And book day etc is for all years isn't it? You can't have a 5 year old sitting up at night "helping" to make a costume.

Also, if you're a working parent, the chances are that the only time you have to make the sodding thing is when the kids are in bed and you should be putting your feet up (or more likely doing the ironing.) In fact, if you have young children it would be the same. I wouldn't be able to get on with stuff on the sewing machine with my 9mo pulling herself up on my leg every five minutes.

DD's last book day was her dressed up as Elizabeth Bennett. One week's notice. We're away the weekend we get the note. Dash to John Lewis on Monday for fabric. Stay up til 1am on Tues, Weds and Thurs cutting, pinning, tacking, refitting, driving self mad in order to get costume ready for Friday. DD gets bus to school in said outfit. Pain in the arse.

Clary · 05/03/2008 00:57

12yrgap Lizzie Bennett is a fab idea tho.

Actually at our school most kids (from a quick straw poll) are coming as Spiderman/Cinderella/Peter Pan/whatever's in the dressing up box.

And me and DD have had great fun buying bits for her Amy the Amethyst fairy costume, so it has been nice.

Agree with OP that that does sound rather a lot of dressing up tho. We only do book day thank goodness.
