To think that leaving teabag splashes on a work surface will usually stain it?

Help me settle a minor domestic debate!

I have suggested that if we all wipe up the tea bag splashes as we make a brew, we won't need to use cream cleaner to remove tea stains.

It's been suggested that our worktop (quite expensive cream Corian type) is at fault as tea stains should just wipe off a worktop.

YABU: it's staining because we chose the wrong work surface.
YANBU: tea stains not wiped up immediately will generally leave a stain.

Thank you for your help with this important issue!

You are correct.

Privatelyliving · 18/09/2023 20:47

My stainless steel sink gets awful with tea stains, but not my black/grey granite work tops.

I'd say most surfaces light enough to show tea stains will have them, but white corian was still a daft choice 😆

LemonQuiche · 18/09/2023 20:51

You’re right. It’s best practice to wipe up immediately.

Thementalloadisreal · 18/09/2023 21:14

Yeah wipe the drips immediately. I was told by a salesman that my quartz workshop “shouldn’t stain” but it does. Mind you he also says “mine doesn’t but then I don’t know what my wife uses to clean it” 🙄

BishyBarnyBee · 19/09/2023 06:55

Thank you!

We chose cream because we have a dark north facing kitchen, I can see that black would have been more practical. The Corian is quite hardwearing so I don't think the cream cleanser is harming it, but it would be great if we could just agree to wipe up as we go...

Don’t hate me but it could be the expensive worktop- our cheap wooden worktop hasn’t any stains and we (including me!) are terrible with out tea bags!!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 19/09/2023 07:02

I wouldn't have chosen a light worktop, but the question is - why wouldn't you wipe up a spill straight away anyway?

Stripeypyjamas · 19/09/2023 07:05

We have white quartz..it can stain but it usually lifts easily and any stains tend to come out over time with sunlight. Just get a worktop protector and a tea bag bin next to the kettle so no one is splashing tea across the surface.

Owjrbvr · 19/09/2023 07:08

You’re right; we ended up buying a glass mat/ surface protector that we liked as it was driving me crazy and I was fed up with nagging about it (my mil was especially bad with this and I didn’t feel I could really say anything more than once)

algasport · 19/09/2023 07:20

A clear glass worktop protector and a little pot for teabags saved my sanity!

TizerorFizz · 19/09/2023 07:28

Put teapot on a tray. A tea making station like a hotel.

My light granite doesn’t stain. We have white quartz in a flat and that’s ok too. However saffron might harm it! DD has “Solid Surface “ in a speckled white which is a bit like Corian and it seems pretty robust. The main thing is to wipe up after you and don’t use staining food, except on a protective board!

Niinja · 19/09/2023 07:29

I think it's the expensive worktop. Pretty much the only thing that stains my pale laminate is turmeric/curry.

CrazyHamsterLady · 19/09/2023 07:33

Our Quartz worktop stains sometimes from tea stains or from the turmeric in curries. If it happens, I make a paste from bicarbonate of soda and leave it on for a couple of hours and it usually gets it out.

Ifailed · 19/09/2023 07:42

Just use a teapot, like a civilised person.

MsFrost · 19/09/2023 07:44

It's a bit of both probably, but wiping up your mess/ spills in a shared kitchen is basic consideration so I voted YANBU.

Sensoria · 19/09/2023 07:48

Ooh thank you for telling me about cream cleaners! We moved recently and our kitchen counter is a cream surface. Not sure what type though - but the kitchen is mainly wood. It is covered in tea stains! I do wipe right away but damage is usually done the second tea hits the counter.

Will try a cream cleaner.

And unfortunately, I do think YABU, but only because I wipe right away but it’s still too late.

BeardieWeirdie · 19/09/2023 08:27

The tub of pink stuff cream gets everything including yellow curry stains off my marble look quartz worktop. It’s magic!
