Just has this conversation with a friend we both have 2 children
and a dog.
our food shopping bills are miles apart
I do small weekly shops and a big quarterly shop.
but averaging it out monthly I spend around 400-450month
this includes
cleaning supplies / dog supplies / treats / hair / soap
basically everything.

5 adults - £100 a week plus milk and bread through the week.

What are you all spending it on?

@Totaly please send me your meal plans, I need to be more you.

Daveismyhero · 18/09/2023 20:36

2 adults, a cat and a dog. We spend between 40 and 60 a week on our food/house products/Toiletries and cat food then dog food is an additional 100 a month
We found we spend way less by doing an online shop as less likely to pick things up for the sake of it. We also look at what's on offer/what gives high nectar points and plan meals around that

ShadyPaws · 18/09/2023 20:37

Just me and £240pm not including cat food or toiletries but does include cleaning products/bin bags etc

StarDolphins · 18/09/2023 20:37

Me, DD, dog & cat

Dog food pm £36
Cat Food £19
Waitrose £200
Tesco £120
Aldi £50

Emeraldrings · 18/09/2023 20:37

About £100 a week but do a top up shop of between £20 and £30 too. Two adults, two teenagers and a 3 year old.
That includes breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal for 4 of us, most ofthe time (DS eats at nursery 4 days a week). DS is still in nappies too and that pushes the price up.
DH moans about how much we spend but I think it's about average.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 18/09/2023 20:37

Family of 4 which includes 1 at uni and is back regularly plus 1 dog but not included on the food bill as I buy hers online but I would say on average £150 minimum. Depends on where I shop. I try to shop at Aldi and top up from Sainsbury’s for the stuff Aldi do not sell. Recently shopping more at Sainsbury’s as I have been so busy I can’t face 2 supermarkets.

cruffinsmuffin · 18/09/2023 20:38

2 adults 2 animals, £910 last month (not counting meals out 😩).

Fuckthatguy · 18/09/2023 20:48

@cruffinsmuffin you must live near me 😅

OneMoreCookieMonster · 18/09/2023 20:50

Sainsburys shopper
2 adults, 1 primary kid, 1 infant

Spend no more than £80/wk max on the delivery. Then probably around £25 on a top up shop at the weekend and on treats.
This includes all meals and packed lunches, kiddie snacks, toiletries, nappies, formula, wipes

Can easily spend alot more but trying to cut out unnecessary treats.

Grr just typing this made me realise it will be going up by 20 quid per week or so as I slowly squirrel treats away for Christmas

Sodullincomparison · 18/09/2023 20:50

£650 -£800 a month for two adults and a five year old.

we are trying to balance out with different shops. Some shops recently have been shockingly bad value from Ocado.

DH has been given the job of meal planning so we can improve the quality of our meals and reduce any wastage.

toilet rolls/ laundry powder and other cleaning materials are really expensive nowadays.

cruffinsmuffin · 18/09/2023 20:52

Fuckthatguy · 18/09/2023 20:48

@cruffinsmuffin you must live near me 😅

😂

I could double it if I added meals out into it! Or takeaway coffees 😬 or lunches at work....

WaitingfortheTardis · 18/09/2023 20:54

2 adults and a 5yo, we have a big £110 shop every 2 weeks with a £20-£30 top up shop in between. We tend to try and buy what's on offer and hardly any brands, dd also has the free school dinners. Usually 1 takeaway and one cheapish dinner out a month on top of that.

Clingy · 18/09/2023 20:54

HobbiddoH · 18/09/2023 20:25

Your post made me think, so I just went onto my online banking and added up my supermarket spend during August and it was £600+ which makes me feel quite sick. We are two adults, one primary aged child and a cat.

Probably not far off that for me, teenager and a cat. Definitely £550 p m. That includes food (incl lunches), cat litter and cat food, cleaning products. No toiletries beyond deodorant and toothpaste.

rasellagirl · 18/09/2023 21:01

Some of these cats are big eaters.

BeyondMyWits · 18/09/2023 21:02

2 years ago ours was £100 a week. That was pretty much it. Including dog, toiletries, cleaning etc.

This week £172!!!! I knew it was creeping up, but my goodness.

Changes need to be made or I'm never going to retire.

Illbebythesea · 18/09/2023 21:02

Honestly probably £200 a week on 2 adults and 3 kids, 0 pets. Could get that down if I done a big shop more often instead of spending £40-£50 a time in tesco but I loathe the big shop & everything about it.

Floralnomad · 18/09/2023 21:04

I’ve just added up August and I spent £475 ish between M&S and Tesco and £200 in Costco ( food / toilet rolls etc ) . That’s for 3 adults , one of whom is gf but we don’t drink alcohol . I haven’t included dog food as I buy that online . I reckon you could add another £200 for lunches when out .

Clefable · 18/09/2023 21:04

£100-110 a week for two adults, two preschool age kids. We buy pet stuff elsewhere but that does include cleaning materials, laundry stuff, nappies, basic toiletries, etc.

Clefable · 18/09/2023 21:05

And I know exactly what I spend as I use YNAB and all grocery spends come out of that category so I can see down to the penny what I spend every month. It shocked me when I was less disciplined and buying lots of brands as we were spending £600+ a month and still having to top up at local shops.

IhearyouClemFandango · 18/09/2023 21:05

Around £600 p/m, 2 adults, 3 kids.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 18/09/2023 21:15

3 adults, no pets. Works out at about £100 every ten days with small top ups......well it does when I go to Aldi. I gave Asda a go today for some stupid reason and got absolutely ripped off. I've been fuming all day about it. 🤣🤣🤣

ChristmasCrumpet · 18/09/2023 21:17

2 adults. One teen. Two smaller DC.

We spend about £180 p/wk and that's not even pushing the boat out.

That actually works out, at £25 p/day for 5 people. £5 per person, per day, for breakfast and dinner (and lunch at weekends) snacks, plus all toiletries, cleaning stuff, drinks, tin foil, loo roll. Everything really.

I cook a lot from scratch. If I didn't, we'd be well over £200 a week.

Unless we drastically reduced the quality of food we are eating, and had super noodles or things on toast, there's little we can do to reduce it.

Justmeandthem · 18/09/2023 21:20

🤣🤣 I think my issue is
I won’t give up my brands I love so much
some I will !
but for example
I have tried and failed at switching from
Heinz
cereals

branded crisps
Soft cheese
drinks
jam
butter
hot chocolate / tea bags

I have really tried to switch to cheaper versions but I can’t 🤣

TigerRag · 18/09/2023 21:20

Just me. Usually £40-60 every other week. And usually £5-10 because I've ran low on stuff. (Bread and bananas generally!)

ontheup23 · 18/09/2023 21:21

About 300 a week 3 children 1 cat
