Weight loss and 'helpful friends'

I struggle with my MH. I have BPD caused by childhood traumas and I have been binge-eating since adulthood.

I am 5'1.

I decided that I was going to take control of my body, so I can keep up with my friends (I go hillwalking and climbing) without nearly killing myself.

So last week I went on a diet. I have lost 7lb in my few days and am really proud of how it's going. And I am DETERMINED.

However, I kid you not, FIVE different friends have piped up with "You don't wanna do calorie counting/you DO wanna do calorie counting/do weight watchers/don't do weight watchers/slimming world is best/ you're doing it all wrong".

Why can't people just give encouragement these days?!!!

AIBU to be upset over people trying to help?

I'd not even bother saying that you're doing anything to people. No matter what, they always have an opinion.

Dieting works different for everyone.

Yes it’s annoying when people try and tell you what to do or what you’re doing is wrong. But just politely say “thanks, but I’m doing it my way and so far it’s working for me”. Then change the subject.

Well done and keep going!!

Everyone’s an expert, or so they think.

Best wishes for every success.,

OP, don’t tell anyone you are on a weightloss campaign. Just do it.

Some years ago I lost 3st without telling anyone I was adjusting my diet. I didn’t want it to be a focus of conversation, people monitoring, giving unwanted advice etc.

However a friendly MN thread was good. But we didn’t argue about Keto or theories etc, we each just did our own thing and encouraged each other.

You have done really well and got off to a great start. So just get on with it and say nothing!

Good luck.

Just filter them out. In fact, the horse has bolted but I’d have been tempted not to even tell them in the first place. Just quietly go about losing weight your own way. If they notice and comment, just say you’ve been cutting back a bit.

Thanks everyone!

You're right, I should just keep it to myself.

I did try the "Thanks for your ideas but my way is working for me so I will stick to that" but they got all defensive.

Argh.

It's because fad diets become a cult like thing.

Good on you! Just stop talking to them about it, nod and fo "hm hmmm" whrn they give "advice" and the chat will die out soon

Well done OP, whatever you are doing, keep doing it and tune out their advice 👏 👍 if it works for you and you feel good doing it that's all that matters. 😊
