Smoked fish in work kitchen

salmonbalmon · 18/09/2023 13:02

Hi, just wondered does anyone know of any way to make smoked fish smell less?

i absolutely love smoked salmon and smoked trout on crackers etc but it’s obviously far too smelly to take to work (very small kitchen with no windows etc) but just wondering does anyone know of any way to make it so it doesn’t smell? Or is it just impossible without smelling too much to have at work?

thanks in advance

Please do not have strong smelling food in canteen it is very unfair. Have the fish at home.

salmonbalmon · 18/09/2023 13:05

@Marblessolveeverything …yes, I know? I said in my OP that I’m not taking it to work because of how smelly it is. I asked if there was any secrets or tips to make it not smelly

Save it for your tea at home. Don’t inflict it on others or you will not be popular.

salmonbalmon · 18/09/2023 13:09

@Prinnny I’m not inflicting it on others, because as I said in my OP, im not taking it to work because it’s smelly.

I asked if there was any way to make it to it doesn’t smell and it’s possible to take to work. That was the question in my OP

I think when it comes to food which has a strong (and often divisive) smell it’s best not to eat it in the office, maybe eat at an outside bench on dry days as it’s a food that’s impossible to make not smell.

Years ago I worked in an office and a lady would microwave smoked mackerel for lunch every day. Its strong smell permeated the whole floor and as she refused to stop, the kitchen was made off limits to all employees which didn’t go down well. Not saying you are that person as you are being considerate, she on the other hand wasn’t mindful of others at all.

Prinnny · 18/09/2023 13:10

And our answer is there is no way so just don’t do it.

FredaFox · 18/09/2023 13:11

No I don't think there is.

It's nice you are looking for an option but save it for your evening meal

ScottBakula · 18/09/2023 13:11

Some not so helpful post there !
I have found tinned fish eaten cold is probably the best option. I like Mackrell or sardines ( tescos finest lime and chilli)
Just make sure you seal the tin / oil in a bag before putting it in the bin.

StoneColdAlibi · 18/09/2023 13:11

Is it that bad if you're not heating it?
I wouldn't have considered it particularly pungent in its natural state

salmonbalmon · 18/09/2023 13:12

Thanks for the people who actually read my OP and answered the question! Sounds like there’s no way to prepare or take it without it smelling so best just to leave it. Thanks!

@Prinnny thanks. It wasn’t clear in your original comment that you were saying there was no way.

this is what I thought too.

Agree with PP that smelly food is smelly, and there isn't much you can do to counter act if it's strong. But, I don't think smoked/cured fish when eaten cold is that smelly? And it sounds like that's what you plan to do?

Frodedendron · 18/09/2023 13:15

I don't think smoked salmon has a strong smell if it is eaten cold? It's usually cooked food that permeates and causes problems.

fearfuloffluff · 18/09/2023 13:18

Have you tried those packs of fish you get pre-cured so it's ready to eat and kind of flakes up? Like in a vacuum pack... They wouldn't smell so bad.

It's better for you to go outside to eat and have some fresh air, so I'd do that!

Used to work with someone from a Jamaican background who brought in saltfish leftovers, I'm sure it was delicious but the smell could knock out three floors of the office!

getfreddynow · 18/09/2023 13:20

Squeeze lemon juice on it and

getfreddynow · 18/09/2023 13:21

and cover in lots of green leaves maybe?

Cupofteafortwo · 18/09/2023 13:21

🤢 the smell turns my stomach. If you hate fish as I do, you can smell it!

FamBae · 18/09/2023 13:45

I agree with pp cold smoked salmon doesn't really smell, add some lemon juice, cream cheese and salad in a sandwich and I wouldn't have thought anyone would notice.
Tinned fish on the other hand, I don't think you can avoid odours with them.

Iamnotastick · 18/09/2023 13:46

Cold fish is fine, plenty of folk eat tuna baguettes etc!

I would pre make any cold fish dishes at home as i find its the oils that tend to hold the smell.

Sexnotgender · 18/09/2023 13:49

If you’re eating it cold it’s probably fine, some inconsiderate fuckers in my office insist on microwaving their bloody fish. Gives me the boak.

LordEmsworth · 18/09/2023 13:53

Eh? A slice of smoked salmon on a cracker isn't going to smell unless it's gone off. Take it in a tupperware box, store it in the fridge, open & eat within 10-15 mins. No one will be able to smell it. It really is not the same as microwaving smoked mackerel.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/09/2023 13:54

Can you keep it in a plastic box and eat it outside?

It's not as if you are microwaving smoked fish (I did this once, about 20 years ago and I'm sure people are still talking about it!).

Fightyouforthatpie · 18/09/2023 13:57

Just another reason why WFH is so much better.

LadyBitsnBobs · 18/09/2023 13:57

YES! Organise to take your smoked fish the same day someone is microwaving a very fragrant curry. My work kitchen/breakout space usually reeks of curry, no one bats an eyelid if something else stinky turns up!

Failing that open a window and /or ask your facilities team to strategically place some air fresheners around the room - neutrodol work well

Ginmonkeyagain · 18/09/2023 13:58

I love fish in all forms but don't eat it at work as I know the smell irritates people. If you must, I think having it cold and in a sandwich is the way to go - so a tuna or smoked mackeral pate sandwich.
