To think this about my new hair....

Had my hair coloured at the weekend.
First time my hairdresser has coloured it.
I am really pleased with how the bottom of it looks, but AIBU to think that the top of my head shouldn't look like this? My husband even agreed it looks like weeks of root growth :-/ Feel like the highlights should have gone over the top of my head right upto the parting? Pics online show that too (have attached one below alongside the first one, which is mine) but i'm no expert....get on really well with my hairdresser so don't want to offend or insult her, but equally want to get it sorted if it isn't how it should be....I also can't pull my hair back from the front to tie it up as there is a block of dark at the front, then block of blonde bits at the back so looks strange.

So you asked for, or after discussion agreed to balayage?

If you didn't fully understand what a balayage was but asked for it, then that's kind of on you, and I'd expect to pay for it to be fixed to how you envisaged it.

However if you asked for a full head of highlights then that isn't what you got and it should be fixed to your liking without you paying extra.

Thanks for the advice everyone- I think many of the PP have missed my updates, but I do not like the Pinterest ones either! I just was using the example (maybe not the best one!) to show what I meant about it reaching the roots.
Perhaps I should have gone for highlights but agree the ones in the Pinterest pic look awfully stripy and dated!

The below images show my hair from the back, and I really like the lower down part! The top is just very dark and looks very obviously dyed at the moment (have also attached photos of it underneath when I try scrape the front back) but i'm hoping it will fade and next time I go I will ask her to blend it further up.I think maybe I needed a lighter shade of brown base colour too.
