I booked a 'sun holiday' for Sept. But ds starts primary in Sept. And that minor fact slipped my mind !

Ds(4) starts school in Sept. He will be going p/t 9-1pm for the first 6 weeks.
Last week We found out about his school. And dh and I were really excited becasue he got into our first choice which is a fab school.

But not only that , I had to fight really hard to get our sun holiday. I lost my priority booking number. So sent off an application, that was lost. Then I had over 30 e-mails and the kept denying receipt of my requests. Then I sent 2 chqs registered post, that got lost. Then another 2 got lost. Then another 2 sent, all of them registered post and finally I get 2 holidays. One for may and one for w/c 15th Sept.
We always used to go on holiday in sept - cheaper because out of school.
But why, during this whole time of fighting with the sun, did it not occur to me that ds starts school ?
How could I compartmentalise such an important fact - whilst talking to dh about the holiday and also talking to dh about the imminent arrival of the letter telling us of ds's school choice.

Anyway I can't change it - I have asked them. I could give it to one of you guys for free.
What a waste

How could I have been so stupid ?
AIBU to think that I am a twat ???

i booked the wrong dates as well, i am going the week after easter. luckily for me the school are fine about it and it is not going to bother the dd's having a extra week of.

IndigoMoon · 04/03/2008 18:51

dd started school on a staggered intake so as soon as we had her date we went for a holiday the week before x

Oblomov · 05/03/2008 08:26

Just go! he's not even legally required to be there!

colditz · 05/03/2008 08:33

And plenty of children start reception after Christmas.

Ineedacleaner · 05/03/2008 08:36

What date does he actually start you might be able to squeeze it in if he is there for a few days then go or like other have said it is a staggered intake.

I know the cost is minimal but it seems a shame to let it go just now when you might be able to work it out and have a nice family holiday before your ds starts school.

dippydeedoo · 05/03/2008 08:38

its only for 4 days isnt it? i should take him and enjoy it it could turn into and educational trip -lots of kids have time off some even 2 weeks ....get gone u fought hard enough for it ...dont fret it will be ok.

Oblomov · 05/03/2008 08:53

ohhhh I don't know what to do.

Stripeyknickers, or anyone, if it is of any use , please let me know.
I will talk to dh again.
You have to laff, I mean how do I get myself into these predicaments.
And it is all SELF INDUCED !!!!!

I think the first few weeks are not about education but about making your child comfortable and forming emotional bonds and understanding expectations

I think if you take the holiday he may be at a disadvantageous and on a back step for quite a while .. he'll have to catch up with the kids who were there and seem to know stuff that he doesn't

so I don't think it's about annoying the teacher but about doing the best for DS .. I almost think if you'd booked one for the 3rd term of reception it would be ok to take but not the first introductory one

So for the sake of your DS I think I'd take the one holiday and not both.

Twiglett · 05/03/2008 08:55

HTH

lucyellensmum · 05/03/2008 09:00

I totally agree with twiglett, It is during the first few weeks that those tentative little friendships are made, i would not take the holiday im afraid. Either that or could you arrange for him to be in the post xmas intake?

I understand why you are upset though - im quite upset, im scared of flying so coudlnt even contemplate a sun holiday - LEM kicks herself up the arse .

If it were a normal school term etc i would go as he will enjoy the holiday but because it is the first i would be very careful about this.

GillianMcPoo · 05/03/2008 09:13

Hang about, do you mean it was a holiday via The Sun newspaper??! We're all referring to your "sun holiday" assuming you've got a bargain to jet off somewhere.. but it's in Chichester, right?!

Oblomov · 05/03/2008 09:31

Yeah Soory, not Ibiza this time.
Chichester doesn't have the same ring, does it ?

I'm sorry but you're agonsing over whether to take DS out of school to go on holiday to chichester??

Oblomov · 05/03/2008 14:11

allright !!
You were all o.k. about it, until I mentioned where it was.
Would Ibiza make it different ?

you cant get into the caravan until 4pm so may only really need to take 3 days off. is he only going in half says at first like many schools so may finish at luchtime. also in our school the teachers only do the home visits at beginning of term so reception dont go in till 3rd week sept.

ive also got the holiday dates wrong in october half term - booked week before. and butlins have been no help at all.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 05/03/2008 17:21

Oblomov - my email is [email protected] if you do decide you're not going. Thanks.

dippydeedoo · 05/03/2008 17:45

HE Mners are rich enough to buy their own surely!! Or they'd be compelled to go to work instead..........

i find this a bit off hand really im a H.E er and i dont assume about others income nor is it anybodys business to discuss even in jest my woring capacity.......

i think theres to much sniping about H.E V SCHOOL on mumsnet and these comments are irrelevant this topic was about a sun holiday not about home education ......

Starbear · 05/03/2008 18:08

Go on holiday. My best friend from primary school didn't join my class until she was six. We have now been friends for 40 YEARS. I only made friends with a another girl because she was a friend of a friend in another class. She named her daughter after me! So life is too short and kids make friends and lose them through out the school years

Oblomov · 05/03/2008 18:47

stripey, I will discuss it with dh and I will def e-mail you soon, whatever we decide. Hope that is o.k.
