Dogs Everywhere

I don't live in the UK but am just back from a holiday in Cornwall. We were shocked at the amount of dogs allowed everywhere. They were in every restaurant, cafe, pub and hotel. Two or three people with dogs would all go into a small shop, blocking the aisles for everyone else. In Port Isaac on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the whole harbour and uphill area was disrupted by loud and continuous barking. Dogs were running around off leash on every beach. People were clogging the narrow pavements with two or three dogs on leads, wheeling dogs around in prams and buggies, stopping outside holiday cottages for ages chatting while their dogs barked, yapped and howled and ruined the peace for the people inside.

We were genuinely wondering if the next time we came back there would be dog and owner spaces in supermarket carparks and an expectation that you should stand up on public transport to let people with dogs sit down.

AIBU to think England has gone a bit mad when it comes to dogs?

They're not 'dog friendly'. They're being taken over by rude and inconsiderate dog owners,

But they are dog friendly - beaches that allow dogs on the beach throughout the day between April and October are in the minority! Most councils don’t allow dogs on beaches at all in the summer.

some only allow dogs on beaches not next to tourist towns (eg Margate beach doesn’t allow dogs april to October, but there’s a bay further along the coast Kent council does allow dogs on all year round, but there’s no town/shops above the beach , just row of houses)

a beach that allows dogs in summer is a dog friendly beach. Most don’t.

This thread has not been interesting in the slightest. Boring, repetitive and completely exaggerated 🥱

What’s wrong with you?! Hanging round a thread to keep saying how boring it is. Odd and embarrassing behaviour!

It's been very interesting, apart from your silly, repetitive and childish posts.

Oh and remember when they were trying to get the dogs out of Afghanistan? That really sickened me.

Yet you are still here with that silly little emoji that you and one other person seem to be enjoying. Also, you cannot comment on someone else's experiences being exaggerated, being as you were not the one who experienced it.

Yes, I think it’s quite late enough for that poster. It’s school tomorrow.

Dog threads always bring the twats out.

This is a bit like people who thing a 'child friendly' restaurants means children can take over and annoy and irritate everyone else. Judgement, consideration and ensuring your dog is on a lead and not tearing around the beach kicking up sand, frightening and intimidating people, and making an unreasonable level of noise is surely basic manners?

And that is vile and disgusting and owners should always clean up but nowhere does it say dog pooed in a restaurant and the owner refused to clean up.

So it’s all okay if a dog poos in a shopping centre ?

MrsMarzetti · 17/09/2023 21:46

10 years from now most of the dogs bought in lockdown by the "jump on a band wagon crowd" will be dead and we can all get back to normal.

Maybe you need to find a more secluded beach. The one you're going to sounds like an illegal rave at Crufts, which i would say is horrific.

Beaches in the summer are full of families and screaming kids too. That sound annoys me more than dogs barking. Why do kids have to scream when playing?

I 💯 agree with you. Dogs over kids anyday for me. I was being sarky ha ha.

Again, why are we comparing children and dogs?
As for screaming kids, I don't enjoy it much either, but it is how some younger children show emotion and most grow out of it.

Abitofalark · 17/09/2023 21:49

Ireland is going to the dogs too or has already gone. I hadn't realised that dogs were such a thing there until a few years ago I went to a commemoration at a graveside where I was shocked to see that people brought their dogs which were clambering between headstones and walking on graves. In another place a popular seaside wall for people to sit on along the promenade was being used by dogs to walk on, making it unpleasant or unusable for people. As if dogs couldn't walk on the pavement.

Carsarelife · 17/09/2023 21:49

@MatchyM where did I say I was too lazy to Train him?
If he's allowed/welcome to go somewhere why wouldn't I take him?
He's quite small and just lies under the table, not causing it being a nuisance.
However some of the so called adults.....

Alstroemeria123 · 17/09/2023 21:50

It always amazes me how many people on MN seem to really dislike children.

curlymom · 17/09/2023 21:50

England is very nice to animals, it’s something to be happy about. If you don’t like it go on holiday elsewhere

Nope, by the amount of people breeding illegally I think there will be more.

Redlarge · 17/09/2023 21:47

In case they arrived at your local pub or wanted to do a bit of shopping?

No because seeing desperate people cling to planes and small children being crushed outside the airport trying to escape was extremely upsetting and quite honestly I couldn't have given a flying fuck if a dog had to stay in Afghanistan. And the fate for the women and girls was much much worse than the fate of the dogs.

PP said dog friendly beaches are noisy with dogs barking. But beaches are noisy in general. A beach in the day in the summer is not where you would go for peace and quiet.

I didn't post the comment, but might it be the thought of dogs potentially being chosen over humans being the issue?

MrsMarzetti · 17/09/2023 21:46

Fingers crossed.

The thing is, dogs and people have coexisted for ages. I don’t like dogs but owners have usually been good and respectful. It’s only in the last few years that owners have been shit and entitled and lazy: examples on this thread.

There are good owners out there who train their dogs to stay home, don’t drag them round cafes and restaurants. But they are increasingly in the minority.
