Dogs Everywhere

SusanandMidge · 17/09/2023 20:36

I don't live in the UK but am just back from a holiday in Cornwall. We were shocked at the amount of dogs allowed everywhere. They were in every restaurant, cafe, pub and hotel. Two or three people with dogs would all go into a small shop, blocking the aisles for everyone else. In Port Isaac on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the whole harbour and uphill area was disrupted by loud and continuous barking. Dogs were running around off leash on every beach. People were clogging the narrow pavements with two or three dogs on leads, wheeling dogs around in prams and buggies, stopping outside holiday cottages for ages chatting while their dogs barked, yapped and howled and ruined the peace for the people inside.

We were genuinely wondering if the next time we came back there would be dog and owner spaces in supermarket carparks and an expectation that you should stand up on public transport to let people with dogs sit down.

AIBU to think England has gone a bit mad when it comes to dogs?

My bad, I re-entered that unusual universe you are in, it was an error).--

rude tbh

Are you american? Just wondering because of the use of ‘leash’. It’s a ‘lead’ in uk. And yes, dogs (like children) are welcome in most places. I think if you swap the word dogs for children the setup and irritation is similar for a lot of us.

I hate the children vs dogs thing. Young children can't be left at home. Dogs can

The 'dogs (like children)' type of comments are so ridiculous, yet they keep coming and coming and coming and coming and coming....

I am going to bow out of this now.
@SusanandMidge YANBU (not sure the same can be said for a few other posters though, sad as it is).

I think if you don't want a dog where you're eating there are still many, many places that are not dog friendly to choose from. Why shouldn't both preferences be catered for.

But both preferences aren’t catered for in many places, that’s the problem. I actually have no issue with well-behaved dogs, but every time I’ve been into a cafe locally recently there has been at least one nuisance dog. There are literally no cafes etc in my local area that aren’t dog-friendly, so my choice is put up or not go. That seems as unfair as places where nowhere is dog-friendly.

Carsarelife · 18/09/2023 17:17

@Alstroemeria123 not sure where you live but in the south east hardly anywhere is dog friendly apart from 1 cafe and 1 coffee shop.

stillawip · 18/09/2023 17:17

We are currently in Cornwall with our two dogs. I sympathise with those who don’t like dogs, as there are more of them around, I agree. Part of the problem is that , with so many more dogs being bought in lockdown etc, it is getting increasingly difficult to find places for them to be looked after whilst you go on holiday, as they get so booked up - it is always my top stress when we go away. And then, if you do take them with you and are in a hotel or a holiday let, you are not usually allowed to leave the dogs unattended in the room/ property whilst you go out for a meal, so they have to come with you. Therefore we need places that allow dogs in. We always make sure that ours lie quietly under the table and don’t bother anyone else, and they certainly don’t bark or make a mess inside.

Carsarelife · 18/09/2023 17:18

@Nevermind202020 I haven't seen lots of posters say dogs are same as children.

I’m surprised at that as I am in the SE (a part of Sussex that seems to be dog central…)

SE here and that’s not my experience. Very limited to where you can go locally that’s not advertised as dog friendly. Different if it’s in the centre but I couldn’t pop out for lunch at a local cafe without a dog being there. I do check and I do vote with my feet.

A new cafe opened at the end of my street a few months ago and they were stopping people to give free samples to tempt them in. I declined as said I don’t like eating in dog friendly places. They were surprised at first but when I explained my thoughts they said they understood but that was their model. I wished them well and moved on.

One café and one coffee shop (what’s the different out of interest I wonder) in the SE 😂

From my home in London I can walk to at least five places within fifteen minutes that take dogs. And sooo many more in central London etc.

We have working dogs in the family. I.e they are on a farm doing a job. They are looked after and have acres of land to roam and be dogs. They do not go to public places and ruin everyone day and Crap everywhere. My family are used to dogs but they are working dogs and not treated as humans or as some idiots say "children" 😂

Could have written this myself!

Look through the posts, there are lots of people comparing dogs to children.
Also, I wasn't 'super rude' to lots of posters, I decided to no longer engage with one poster.

CuriousPixie · 18/09/2023 17:32

Well behaved dogs I have few issues with but the owners who put on their ickle wickle voice as they pretend to be in control of their mutt as they speak to it in soothing gentle tones, makes me seriously want to vomit.
Go and get properly trained you utter twat (owner not dog)

Carsarelife · 18/09/2023 17:33

@MatchyM one is a Coffee shop situated inside a hardware store that doesn't sell food but has let dogs enter for years.

The cafe sells food with outside and inside seating

MehtotheChristmasrunup · 18/09/2023 17:34

I hardly every see badly behaved dogs. Or dogs that smell of anything other than dog. I live in an area full of dogs too.
It worse seeing lifeless fat animals being dragged around actually.

SusanandMidge · 18/09/2023 17:53

But the smell of dog when you're eating a meal is not really pleasant for a lot of people.

Wet dog is the only smell that makes me retch. And I work in a hospital and have smelt every possible smell over decades. I accept that’s a me-thing though.

Totally agree tbh. But that's on the owner of the establishment.

What if someone joined this week? It’s a new thread to them.

What if someone has just had a bad recent experience and wanted to canvas opinions?

Who are you to police threads and why join this one if you are so bored?

Why? Dog hating is a tried and tested activity on MN. You can almost classify it as a hobby. Thinking about it... it is a hobby!!

I love dogs and this is what made me book a break to Cornwall last year. Great I could take him literally everywhere except Wetherspoons who didn't allow dogs. My dog is quiet, no bother and 13 years old, doesn't bark etc. I was so grateful to the places letting him in. It meant he could have a holiday too. Took him to Devon this year - not quite the same vibe

Was the dog in need of a break due to a stressful job?!

And what if it wanted to go somewhere else?!
