Dogs Everywhere

SusanandMidge · 17/09/2023 20:36

I don't live in the UK but am just back from a holiday in Cornwall. We were shocked at the amount of dogs allowed everywhere. They were in every restaurant, cafe, pub and hotel. Two or three people with dogs would all go into a small shop, blocking the aisles for everyone else. In Port Isaac on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the whole harbour and uphill area was disrupted by loud and continuous barking. Dogs were running around off leash on every beach. People were clogging the narrow pavements with two or three dogs on leads, wheeling dogs around in prams and buggies, stopping outside holiday cottages for ages chatting while their dogs barked, yapped and howled and ruined the peace for the people inside.

We were genuinely wondering if the next time we came back there would be dog and owner spaces in supermarket carparks and an expectation that you should stand up on public transport to let people with dogs sit down.

AIBU to think England has gone a bit mad when it comes to dogs?

@ivfbabymomma1 but the Op was in Cornwall. Where most people with dogs were probably holiday makers rather than people that live there deciding to take dogs into restaurants.
Also isn't 3 large dogs a bit different from one. 3 big dogs is a whole different ball game

ivfbabymomma1 · 18/09/2023 07:25

@Carsarelife I see what your saying but I wouldn't take mine on holiday either, I have a dog sitter.

Yes I do have 3 dogs but they are chihuahuas so they make one 1 between them lol! Chihuahua personalities are a while different game though, they are like cats. Not interested in being stroked and fanned over by any passer-by 🤣

BarrelOfOtters · 18/09/2023 07:27

I love my dog, and other people’s dogs, and I love that places are more dog friendly so can sit inside a pub with the dog after a walk….

but you aren’t wrong there a lot of ridiculous and entitled dog owners about who really don’t have a clue. But if you want to take your dog on ho,I day you can’t leave them alone in accommodation. It’s a bugger.

Carsarelife · 18/09/2023 07:29

@ivfbabymomma1 I'd love a chihuahua I think they are lovely but most I've come across have been yappy. Like really yappy. Wouldn't discount them though.

I had 2x holidays. One in Cornwall and One abroad. Thought it'd be lovely to take my dog on one of the holidays rather than leave him both times.
And it was lovely. He's very much part of the family. I purposely looked for a dog friendly holiday base rather than going to an area where dogs aren't as welcomed

Summerbay23 · 18/09/2023 07:43

We haven’t had a problem in Cornwall to be honest although we’re dog owners so maybe don’t notice. I guess it’s up to business owners to police and I’m assuming they feel they like the business from dog owners so would prefer not to restrict customers.

Carsarelife · 17/09/2023 21:36

@Susuwatariandkodama yes I noticed that. Both times stayed in caravan Park and in Cornwall dog was allowed in disco and bingo, but Devon wasn't allowed. Didn't want to leave him in caravan really as that's not the point of bringing him. Also I'm Devon Cliffs he wasn't allowed on the beach. He was allowed on open top bus ride though

Why on earth would you want to take a dog to a disco? Utterly ridiculous!

Carsarelife · 18/09/2023 07:53

@JonesTheSteam it was on a caravan park. You are not allowed to leave dogs alone in caravan.
My 7 year old wanted to go to the disco. Does that answer your question?
I didn't just sit at home and decide I was taking him to the local nightclub

Maireas · 18/09/2023 07:56

I think, @JonesTheSteam - the answer lies in previous answers: the dog isn't an animal to them, it is a family member and the equivalent of a child.
What has happened, quite rapidly, is a societal change. For many years, no-one took dogs (other than service dogs) into shops, cafés and restaurants. They were forbidden. There was a hygiene notice on the door etc. What's happened is a rapid rise in dog ownership, a lot of disposable income, and dogs being regarded as family, not pets. For some, it's fine. For others, it's not. Now we have the polarisation of opinions such as on this thread.

It does.

So, basically, your daughter lost out because of your dog.

How come? She got to go to the disco.

Well you didn't make that clear.

Just find it bloody weird that anyone would even post that they weren't allowed to take their dog to a disco or bingo.

UsernameNotAvailableArghh · 18/09/2023 08:04

Uk dog ownership went from 9m to 13m as a result of lockdown, 44% increase - that’s why they seem everywhere

Skogrammy · 18/09/2023 08:04

Another dog hating thread. How original.

HuwEdwardsBottom · 18/09/2023 08:08

What a bunch of miserable buggers there are on this thread. I’d rather a cafe or restaurant full of well behaved dogs than one of screaming kids running riot and disrupting everyone else’s meal.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 18/09/2023 08:09

We have a dog I'm our house . I don't like it but was out voted, the rest of the family are dog lovers. I have no like for it , they treat it like a child honestly. It seems lately that dogs ARE everywhere. Even my friend takes her dog to the pub when we go out and gives it her food.
Dogs shouldn't be everywhere it's disgraceful
I don't care your dog is friendly. I don't give a shit . I don't like dogs ffs ! Walk the thing but not in shops and treating it like your child that has to go everywhere with you . It's an animal ffs

Another comment suggesting people are dog haters simply because they ask dog owners to be considerate.

How original.

Stroopwaffels · 18/09/2023 08:10

I agree with the OP - the number of dogs has exploded in the last 5 years. They are everywhere and many of them cannot behave and haven't been trained. I don't imagine that the percentage of badly behaved dogs has changed that much in the last few years but because there are more dogs overall, it's more of an issue.

What I don't get about the whole phenomenon is that expectation from dog owners that there is a desire to interact with their pets. You chose to have a dog, I chose not to have a dog. I don't want to interact with your dog, I don't want it in my personal space, I don't want it anywhere near me. Keep it to yourself. You have no right to inflict your dog on anyone else, and don't get the hump when people tell you to keep it away.

Johnisafckface · 18/09/2023 06:28

I love love dogs. I have very well behaved dogs but I don’t think dogs should be in stores or restaurants/pubs unless they are service animals.

Why can’t all dog owners be like you? I wonder why things have changed quite so much.

Your beef is not with dog owners. They are doing nothing wrong by taking their dogs to places which allow dogs. Complain to the business owners. Vote with your feet.

ivfbabymomma1 · 18/09/2023 07:19

I have 3 dogs, huge dog lover but I don't see the need to take them into shops & restaurants! They would much rather be at home in their beds in peace and be able to wander about.

A country pub after a walk is about my limit but it rarely happens, I'd rather drop them off home first.

I completely accept that well-trained dogs should be allowed in country pubs. It’s long been part of the culture. Central London cafes, not so much…

Are you american? Just wondering because of the use of ‘leash’. It’s a ‘lead’ in uk. And yes, dogs (like children) are welcome in most places. I think if you swap the word dogs for children the setup and irritation is similar for a lot of us.

Agree.

Nw22 · 18/09/2023 08:15

This is so boring. How many times a week does the same thread come up? Pretty much everyone I know has a dog or loves them. And I’ve never had problems with other dogs in restaurants. Children on the other hand …

HuwEdwardsBottom · 18/09/2023 08:17

I’m always wary of people who say they don’t like dogs. They tend to be unpleasant people in my experience.

Narwhalsh · 18/09/2023 08:19

Why is everyone blaming the dogs when it is in fact humans who are the issue? Intolerant ones in particular… if you don’t like the way other people live their lives, don’t go to places like Cornwall in the Summer!

Why do people keep complaining about these threads yet still read and post on them. It’s weird behaviour.

And remember that new users join MN every week. So this topic might actually be new to some. It’s a bit arrogant to think everyone has been here as long as you have.

And for some people they may have had a recent bad experience with canines which prompts them to post a thread. Like the OP. Explain why they should not post? Surely it’s easier for dog-defenders like you not to open these threads if they upset you quite so much.

Yes and the predictable comparison with kids is embarrassing.
