Late to the e-reader party. Is the 2023 version worth the extra money or is the older version good anyway?

As long as you get a paper white model (backlit) they are all great . Get the biggest memory you can afford as well

I bought a reconditioned Kindle Oasis for the price of a Paperwhite. I love having buttons again, it has massive storage and the warm light is fantastic. I like having the book cover picture on when the kindle is turned off as I found without seeing the authors name everytime I pick up the book, I kept forgetting who wrote what.
Definitely get a back-lit one, it's so good for reading in bed without tiring your eyes.
Sort out your collections straight away.
Bookbub is great as it's so cheap I've experimentes and discovered some authors I wouldn't have paid full price for.
I've also got an older Kobo. It's also great but unfortunately Amazon is just too easy to use.
Whatever you decide, enjoy your reading!

I have a 5 year old Kindle paperwhite. I love it. As others have said, its only function is reading and it's brilliant at that. I've just come back from holiday and was able to read on the beach very easily.

I also have a tablet that has the Kindle app. There's no comparison, the Kindle is so much better. And the battery lasts ages

I just got a new one and love it.

I mainly use it on holiday as I can't pack real Books. I would hope to read at least 4-5 books on a weeks holiday so that would take a lot of space.

I still read hardbacks, paperback, audiobooks, second hand books.

I dngaf what format a book is in, I read them all.

I had one of the first E readers, a Sony. It was a thing of beauty and I loved it, but it wasn’t connected to the internet, you had to download books on to your pc or laptop and then synch them. So if you were travelling you had to make sure you downloaded enough books before you went! The Kindle/iBooks apps are basically portable bookshops! The screen eventually cracked on the Sony because it kept falling on the floor when I dozed off reading in bed. I don’t have that problem with my iPad!

I use the kindle app on my phone. Its fine.

DD lost her kindle on a flight. I'm still furious - mostly with myself as I think it was me who put it in the weird little section in front and not the main section - but I've been thinking of getting a reconditioned one for her instead of buying another new one. what does everyone think?

And OP - I agree with everyone else - as long as you get a paper white so that the light is "natural", it doesn't really matter which one. DD had a slightly larger one which actually, I did quite like and might get that one next - but they are truly brilliant. And I like knowing that the vast bulk of the books I read - which is once and then never again - are not also cluttering up the planet, destroying the rainforests etc.

What is page curl @Caswallonthefox?

It replicates turning the page of a book. So when you swipe left or right it curls the page like a paper book would. If you have the app it's in the Aa menu under more.

I lied these days it's called page turn animation.

RampantIvy · 18/09/2023 12:53

Thank you @Caswallonthefox. That wouldn't be a selling point for me.

DRS1970 · 18/09/2023 15:33

And I am advising against that....

Madcats · 18/09/2023 17:04

I can easily fit my Paperwhite into one of those Uniqlo crossbody bags along with a load of other stuff. That's probably a whole new thread.

Those asking about reconditioned/older models, there is a lengthy Wikipedia article outlining the improvements between models. Although I have a fairly old model I find it easy to read in the sun.

My Kindle arrived this morning and I a can't wait to take it on the long train journey I have tomorrow. Thanks all for your advice and tips. It was definitely worth waiting for the Amazon Prime day!

I have two, a really ancient one & a paper white that’s about five years old. I was also given a Fire as a present which I like for cookery & gardening books as you get the colour illustrations.
The house is filled with crammed bookshelves!
Things I especially like about the kindle are the way it can store SO many books in a small space, the fact that it tells me if I’ve already bought a book before. I always used to be buying duplicate books when I’d forgotten that I already had a copy. Plus there aren’t many books, apart from second hand if you’re lucky, that you can buy for 99p whereas there are always some to buy for Kindle. Found some really interesting books, fiction & non fiction, through the daily deals.
