Mirena coil fitting experiences - a poll on the painfulness!

Due to have mine fitted this week (for heavy periods)

Had a non hormonal coil fitted years ago, which was a bit uncomfortable, but bearable, however, having read a lot of the posts on here, there seem to be a lot of bad experiences.

Please be really honest, if you've had one put in!

YABU - it was fine
YANBU - it was an absolute mofo

Having it fitted was ok. Not a fun experience but not painful, more slightly comfortable.
However, I lost the strings when I needed it removed and new one put in, so had to go into local hospital for them to do it. Oh my gosh it hurt like buggery. If I need that doing again, I will insist on sedation. The nurse was really concerned for me so perhaps the doctor was not that gentle - don't know but wouldn't want it repeated (which is a worry as current one is due to come out and again can't feel the strings!).

The (former gynae specialist) GP had to stop after 15/20 minutes of trying and sent me to the hospital’s tricky coil clinic. There it took the best part of 30 minutes, with the doctor having to send for more instruments and another doctor to help. It was somewhat painful and definitely more traumatic than I’d bargained for. The nurse suggested it can be affected by cervix position. Once they’d decided mine was at 2 o’ clock it (and latest smear) was much easier.

My GP (lovely man) tried to insert mine and failed so I was sent to the FP clinic. A lady in a white coat who resembled Mrs Overall from Acorn Antiques shuffled into the room. Don't worry, she said, I've done thousands of these, you won't feel a thing. And I didn't! She was lovely and still working there (must have been well past retirement age by then) to remove it and insert the next one a few years later.

Very painful before I had had a baby, but bearable, took pain killers before.
After the baby, zero pain 😂

Can't see the poll but I had to have mine put in under hysteroscopy (long story) and neither the failed attempts or the successful one hurt in the slightest.

So my OBGYN when I lived in the US said she wouldn’t do it in a regular appointment as I’d never delivered vaginally and it would need more anaesthetic. Which just put me off tbh and left with a script for the pill instead!

Apparently I have a very awkward retroverted cervix, the GP and nurse both failed to get my coil in.

I then went to the hospital, took them 20 minutes and they had to use a special tool to try and straighten out my cervix a bit to get the coil in.

A year and a scan later due to constant bleeding, discovered in June the coil hasn't been in the correct position, have to wait until December before they can fit me in to remove and replace.

Having said all that, it was uncomfortable and a bit twingey, but I wouldn't say particularly painful. Having my underarm hair lasered hurt more!

HouseHassle · 17/09/2023 21:32

My first was placed pre-childbirth. Was uncomfortable but nothing more significant than that. Removal prior to pregnancy was much more uncomfortable!

My second was post childbirth and fitted by a gynaecologist in hospital due to an unrelated health condition related to a potential side effect of insertion. Was unaware she'd even done it whilst we were making awkward small talk.

IsabelaYourBoyfriendsHere · 17/09/2023 21:40

I've had the copper coil fitted twice and removed once, both didn't hurt a bit.
First time was about six weeks after my first baby was born, removed about ten months later (not because I was unhappy with it, just because we were planning on TTC again) and second time was six months after my third was born. Neither time was comfortable but I definitely didn't find them painful! Had mine in about 18 months now with no issues.

Mine was truly excruciating, possibly because I have an inverted uterus.
However still brilliant and I had 3 from age 41 to menopause at 52.

wienine · 17/09/2023 22:24

I have a retroverted uterus and have had 3 Mirena coils. None of them felt particularly painful and it was straightforward. No pain relief needed.

But oh the hormone swings afterwards! It took until the 3rd one (I didn't keep any of them in for the full 5 years) to realise that the Mirena was the culprit, and looking back I don't know how DH put up with me.
