To think that a lot of adults (not kids or teenagers) are spoilt brats now?

I'm talking about fully functioning adults of all ages from twenties to old age, expect the entire universe to conform to what they want? Not need, want.

I'm talking about people citing human rights if they can't drive everywhere, stating that their Christmas is ruined if they can't have real butter in their mash, that they're being attacked if they accidentally learn any non fluffy history about the UK, getting genuinely angry at just the sight of a caravan across the street.

People seem to expect a sort of personalised world, where everything they encounter is exactly the way they would like it. Nothing even slightly disconcerting or uncomfortable, nothing jarring or even unexpected.

It's all so beige, neutral.

I was thinking about this the other day. Can you imagine if the UK went to war. There would be no make do and mend spirit of the previous war generations.

It would be fucking bedlam
(See covid times)

You can't compare because we were totally self sufficient. Now we need imports and in the case of Covid the country who we rely on had the biggest lock down. There were enough volunteers to show that underneath the wartime spirit would still be there among the people. However unlike the war years the government would let us down.

Was actually just discussing this with my DH , why our DD is fucking moaning about everything and I mean every damned little thing ,nothing in the world is good enough . Turned into this precious thing . Came round for a cup of tea and totally harshed our Sunday buzz . DD no offence but FFS just fucking fuck off 🙄

I blame the parents.

I don’t know when this mythical time was when nobody would have complained about camper vans and caravans parked on their street. People have been getting irate about that sort of thing for decades.

MsFrost · 17/09/2023 18:35

People like this only suffer in the end when the world cannot live up to their expectations. It is a shame the modern world makes people this way.

Lol, no the UK wasn't self sufficient at the outbreak of WWII. If it wasn't for the US, the country would have starved. What do you think was in the North Atlantic convoys?

Jigglypufff · 17/09/2023 18:54

I hear this sort of “violating human rights” malarkey all the fucking time at work. 99% of the time it’s bollocks.

however, using ANYTHING but real butter in mash is an actual human rights violation. 😂

I'm not talking about food, my family are merchant navy going back generations, my Dad's ship was hit . Make do and mend was mentioned, we don't have the quality clothing, shoes etc to make do and mend. We don't have the fabric manufacturers. You could take cars to bits and put them back together, as I said you can't compare.

NeelyOHara1 · 17/09/2023 19:45

I think we need to agree on some new societal Rules of Engagement norms as it's getting to be a bit of a CF free for all.

PickoftheMix · 17/09/2023 19:52

Spoilt brats or just built up to expect more from life over the past few decades?

80skid · 17/09/2023 20:06

I think there's a lot of entitled people. I think this most mornings as I side step all of the cars parked on pavements and zig zags and the dog crap on pavements while walking my kids to school. On the rare occasions there's parking wardens there, the cars all disappear, so clearly know they shouldn't be there, but it's convenient for them to be there and their needs are greater than anyone else's.
If the only reason you don't break rules which are there for the greater good (whether laws or etiquette) is when there will be a direct consequence to you, you're a shitty person

YANBU op.

I think people have always complained about stuff and got annoyed about stupid things. The difference now is the narcissism and self-centred attitude. 20-30 years ago people’s primary concern was more shifted towards what other people thought and the desire to fit in with the community. You could argue that people are even more concerned now about what people think (social media etc) but actually I think people have moved away from focusing on the wants and needs of other people to the wants and needs of themselves. Social media hasn’t helped but also the idea of personalisation and everything being on demand. It’s “I want”, and “what’s in it for me”. Everyone’s first thought always seems to be about themselves. It’s just narcissism, selfishness and egocentrism.

stating that their Christmas is ruined if they can't have real butter in their mash

The entitled people on that thread were the parents insisting that although their lactose intolerant child would be be fully catered for, for free, with no contribution from them, they wanted everyone else to have a lactose free Christmas, which they weren't subsidising and don't supply themselves for their child.

I'd say in this case misrepresentation or comprehension skills is a bigger issue than entitlement. And I like butter on my mash at Christmas and will have it if I'm cooking. Who pays the piper calls the tune.
