YouDus · 17/09/2023 11:50

I've been desperate to lose weight since the end of 2016 but I'm currently obese.

I really wanna do it and love seeing weight loss on the scales and from past experience weight loss improves my mental health and gives me a sense of hope

Have you tried before?
Is there anything stopping you from having another go?
How much would you like to lose?

I have had the best results when I have focused on achieving non-scale related victories. E.g. my first ever full push-up, or an improved 5k run time. I'm currently working towards being able to do a pull-up.

The weight takes care of itself and falls off, if I put my all into training my body to get stronger and eating plenty of protein at every meal.

Successful weight loss is 75% dieting, though.

Also, some people (like me) cannot exercise due to disabilities.

I have a feeling that the OP is trying to find a way to change her eating habits.

Find outdoor activities you love doing.

A lot of gym/exercise seems focused on punishment, rather than enjoyment. Do stuff that you really look forward to.

GOODCAT · 17/09/2023 12:18

Start gradually by cutting out the bad habits and eating only at meal times with just plain water, tea or coffee and fruit or veg in between. You will start to lose weight without any real effort and that will help motivate you.

Yes - I've lost weight several times before successfully. The biggest weight loss I had at the age of 30-31 was from 15 stone 1 to 7 and a half stone.

Earlier this year between May and August - 11 weeks in total I lost 2 and a half stone going from 14 stone 1 to 11 and a half stone - then it all went to hell in a handcart for a stupid reason.

I am impatient. This is what's stopping me. I want to lose it by yesterday!

I was 8 stone and a size 8 in 2016 - in my 40s

I haven't been under 10 stone 10 since 2017.

To get down to 10 and a half stone would be blooming marvellous but ultimately I want to get down to & stone so have 5 stone to lose

@Snowpaw - protein is very filling with relatively little calories - so you've got the right idea there!

I find what really motivates me though is seeing that difference in the scales each week. I live for my weigh in day!

@starfro - I really like exercise classes - I used to look forward very much to those

It's sounds to me like you are massively crash dieting and then piling it back on. I think you need to work on losing it more slowly and keeping it off.

YouDus · 17/09/2023 15:18

@GOODCAT - thank you. A similar plan has worked for me in the past.

I find drinking 2 litres of water a day massively helps

BBC sounds radio 4 "just one thing" inspired me. His voice is so annoying. But the premise really helped me. Have a listen 👂

Drinking water is good. Try not to drink calories.

Can you try intermittent fasting?
2 medium-sized meals plus one or two healthy snacks per day...
Cut out, or at least limit sugar, UPF and refined carbs?
Eat 50% plants, 25-30% lean protein, some complex carbs and a little healthy fat?
Exercise at least 20-30 minutes most days?

There are many online trainers - I like HIIT with Growingannanas and weight training (dumbbells) with Caroline Girvan.

The Sugar Solution (Mark Hyman) is a good explanation of how we get addicted to sugar, UPF and refined carbs, and how to address the cravings.

YouDus · 17/09/2023 20:36

@PaminaMozart - thanks for the tips - yes I do occasionally do intermittent fasting. I do the exercising thing as well - combination of weights/cardio
