I've ruined my jumper haven't I?

ORYX99 · 15/09/2023 08:44

I have a beautiful jumper which is cream and red. Hand wash only which is what I did. Left it to soak and when I came back the red had rum all over the cream. I'm absolutely gutted. I'm never going to be able to fix this am I? It's made of wool and I'm kicking myself for not getting it dry cleaned. I just followed a video online showing how to wash wool.

Kicking myself.

If anyone knows of any miracle tips please let me know but I fear it needs to go in the bin.

My mum gave it to me. It is only a jumper but I'm tally sentimental over it and sobbing quietly behind my desk at home.

Run, not rum. Though I could use some rum currently.

Do dry cleaners help with this sort of thing, or just spot stains?

Well there's not really a way to put back the dye that has run, but you could always have a bash at dying it yourself, give it some new life and a brand new colour? Wool dyes quite easily!

Qwerty21 · 15/09/2023 08:47

Could it not just be a pink and red jumper now? Or does it look awful. I hate it when this happens. My kid has red and white striped pjs and they are machine washable so I did and the dye bleed into the white so now they are red and pink.

pandarific · 15/09/2023 08:47

There is stuff you can buy which releases dye which has run. Have a look on Amazon/online.

No it looks awful. Half of it is still cream and it has big blotches of red all over it.

I don't need to put any dye back as the bits that are meant to be red are still red. I just want to get rid of the bits that have run but I fear I won't be able to. Gutted.

Unfortunately I don't think you can

Could you use a pink dye on the cream? Post a pic so we can see it

If it's hand wash only and you did that, I'd return and get a refund

VeridicalVagabond · 15/09/2023 09:01

Oh good if the red is still red you might be able to fix it with Carbona, I think you can buy it on Amazon, it fixes run dye. Worth giving it a go, and if not dye the whole thing red?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/09/2023 09:03

Would colour run remover work? It's worked for me before but don't think I used it on wool. However if it's ruined anyway might be worth a go?

It was bought in 1989 the year I was born. I have no idea how my mum used to wash it.

I've spoken to the dry cleaners and they're going to do their best. For anyone wondering they've asked me to air dry it flat before I bring it in.

Good luck, I hope they can sort it! I have a jumper my mum gave me that she wore when she was pregnant with me and I'd be gutted if that got damaged so I understand the sentimentality.

ORYX99 · 15/09/2023 09:24

She's wearing it in lots of photos from me up until I am in my teens. I've been recreating them with my son for an album. It has a big red star on the front and I used to trace my fingers round it whilst singing Starman by David Bowie (her favourite song) with her.

Hi @ORYX99

I am so sorry that this has happened -it’s so upsetting when something like this happens to a treasured item.

Consensus amongst online cleaning experts seems to suggest that washing again might help. (Avoid any colour run products containing bleach if it’s wool.)

If it was me, I would probably have a go at stain removing following one of the suggestions below on a very small patch on the jumper before going to the drycleaners, (which I am not sure about, myself - I would try to find some more advice before doing that).

Also, I am not very familiar with Mn forums but I think there is a cleaning one somewhere- you could repost your question on there.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

How to Remove Color Runs on a Cashmere Sweater

Christiane asked: How do I remove color runs on a cashmere sweater? I washed a cashmere sweater (gray and fine pink lines) in a cold, delicate wash cycle

Oh no. How awful it's sentimental. Really hope you get it fixed. Good luck with the dry cleaners

If you left it to soak in warm water that will be what went wrong.
There are colour run removers that might help but I have no idea if it would be a good idea.

@ORYX99 Knit another one or have one knitted.
It is not quite the same as having the original but it can be reproduced .
