To ring GP over leg pain only when walking

I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and have had quite a hard time so far this pregnancy so realise that my health anxiety has probably been set off and that I'm working myself up.

But for the first 22-23 weeks of pregnancy I had dry hyperemesis so was basically house bound the entire time, couldn't work, couldn't get up and walk about much, just stayed at home trying to survive the crippling nausea.

Diet was atrocious. The only foods that didn't make the nausea worse were carbs like white toast or crackers, things like that. I already had a BMI of 31 going into the pregnancy so wasn't exactly at the peak of my fitness before but things have obviously only gotten worse since being housebound.

Started to feel better around 23 weeks, did light movement, out and about with my DS but nothing strenuous. 27 weeks, diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes which is really what has tipped me over the edge in terms of health anxiety.

So for the last couple of weeks I've been going on walks, only 10- 20 mins or so at a time after meals to help lower blood sugars and have discovered that ... I can't walk!

No more than 60 seconds into walking briskly my lower legs sort of seize up and my calves feel like a mild cramp or like they are burning/itching.

The pain isn't so bad that I have to stop walking but it definitely slows me down and is very uncomfortable to push through. The thing is, as soon as I get home and stop walking all the pain and symptoms go away and there is no muscle ache the day after like you would get when you've first started working out.

Of course I couldn't resist googling it which was the worst idea as now I'm worrying I have vascular disease as the symptoms are so similar. I was thinking of ringing the GP this morning to ask about it but I'm not sure if I'm just being overly anxious and perhaps this is just a thing that happens in pregnancy.

AIBU to ring the GP?

Certainly ring. If nothing else it will put your mind at rest.

I would ring. You've got something that's not right. That's what they should be there for

Sapphire387 · 15/09/2023 09:04

I would have thought it was something more to do with nerves and the weight of pregnancy and something pressing on your back, perhaps.

Best to call them to put your mind at rest and see if there is something that they can do to help.

All the best.

Thanks for the replies. I've just called in and got a telephone call back this morning so hopefully there are some checks they can do to put my mind at rest. I'm already stressing about the increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 5 years after having gestational diabetes so the last thing I want is to have some kind of vascular problem that's not going to go away either.

Isn't it awful that we've now got to the stage where we consider "should I ring the GP" when not so long ago it would have been "should I see the GP......Sorry hope you feel better soon OP.

@sueelleker That's what I'm worried it is whilst apparently often a symptom of peripheral artery disease. I just want the GP to either confirm or rule it out so I can stop worrying about it so much as it's stressing me out.
